About All India Bar Examination (AIBE)
The All India Bar Examination (AIBE) is conducted by the Bar Council of India (BCI) to assess whether law graduates meet the benchmark to practise law in India. It is a professional certification examination, not an entrance test for admission to an LL.B. course. Candidates who qualify are eligible for the Certificate of Practice, subject to the applicable BCI and State Bar Council requirements.
Latest cycle: On the official AIBE website checked on 11 October 2026, the registration portal identifies fresh candidates for AIBE XXII. The public notices available during this check did not show AIBE XXII application deadlines, an examination date, or a 2027 calendar. Dates and fee amounts below are therefore not guessed; candidates should confirm the live portal and official notices before acting. The latest completed cycle with a publicly posted schedule was AIBE XXI, held on 7 June 2026.

AIBE eligibility
BCI's notification for AIBE XX onwards permits specified categories to register, provided their LL.B. education is from a BCI-recognised university or a BCI-approved college affiliated with a recognised university. The official notification includes graduates who have not yet received their degree, eligible final-semester students without backlogs in earlier semesters, and certain graduates who are not enrolled with a State Bar Council or have surrendered their enrolment certificate. Category-specific undertakings and supporting documents may be required. Read the applicable notice in full; eligibility is not established solely by this summary.
- Final-semester candidates: Must meet the BCI's stated final-year/final-semester and no-backlog conditions and provide the required semester records and undertaking.
- LL.B. graduates awaiting their degree: May be eligible under the BCI notification with the prescribed marksheets and undertaking.
- Graduates without current State Bar Council enrolment: The BCI notice describes eligible cases, including candidates who have not enrolled or who surrendered their enrolment certificate; additional conditions apply.
- Recognised legal education: Candidates must verify that their university or college satisfies BCI recognition/approval requirements.
Use the official notice's eligibility checklist and document requirements for the candidate's category. Requirements can change between cycles and may include an undertaking, self-attested marksheets, LL.B. records, or enrolment documentation.
AIBE application fees
The AIBE XXII fee should be taken from the live BCI application portal, including any category-specific amount, payment charges, and applicable taxes displayed at checkout. Older IndCareer pages contain fees from earlier AIBE cycles; they are historical figures and should not be used as the current fee schedule.
| Applicant category | AIBE XXII fee | How to confirm |
|---|---|---|
| General / OBC and other applicable categories | Confirm the current amount in the official application portal | Review the amount before payment; keep the transaction receipt |
| SC / ST and other eligible categories | Confirm the current amount and any applicable concessions in the official application portal | Check category eligibility and upload documents requested by BCI |
Exam pattern and marking
AIBE has been conducted as a pen-and-paper examination using objective questions and an OMR response sheet. The published AIBE XXI syllabus and guidelines are the most recent cycle-specific materials available in the official notices reviewed for this entry. Candidates should download the AIBE XXII syllabus and examination guidelines when BCI publishes them: question count, duration, language options, permitted materials, marking and other test-day rules must be taken from that cycle's documents. Do not assume older descriptions of AIBE as an open-book test still apply.
| Pattern item | Current-cycle guidance |
|---|---|
| Question format | Objective / multiple-choice questions; verify the official XXII instructions |
| Response method | Pen-and-paper / OMR in recent cycles; follow the current admit-card instructions |
| Duration, total questions and marks | Check the AIBE XXII syllabus and examination guidelines when published |
| Negative marking and permitted materials | Follow the current cycle's official examination guidelines; older open-book guidance may be obsolete |
| Passing benchmark | BCI publishes the applicable qualifying standard; consult the current notification and result notice |
AIBE XXII and 2027 dates
The official AIBE website currently lists the AIBE XXII fresh-candidate portal. The public notice list reviewed on 11 October 2026 did not provide a complete AIBE XXII schedule or any AIBE 2027 dates. Check the AIBE website and candidate portal for the registration closing date, correction window, admit-card release, examination date, answer-key challenge window, and result announcement. These dates can change through BCI notices.
Historical IndCareer pages were found in both indcaree_en.wp_posts and indcareer_v2.unified_content under /en/aibe and older section slugs. Those pages include references to AIBE XVIII, XX, and earlier formats, including superseded eligibility, fee, language, and open-book details. They are retained as historical context; the BCI's current cycle documents are authoritative. Legacy AIBE routes redirect to this guide and its corresponding sections.
