Zakir Husain College is one of the oldest colleges of Delhi University and has a long and illustrious history. It was founded by Ghaziuddin Feroz Jung in the year 1792 as a Madarsa and was named Delhi College in the year 1825.Later on, after merging with Lahore College it was subsequently renamed as Anglo-Arabic College. It was affiliated to Delhi University in 1928. Soon afterwards it became a degree college and finally became a P.G. college in 1943. Post independence in the year 1948, Delhi College was revived in the same building as the original Madarsa Ghaziuddin.While evening classes began in 1958, the college got its present name in 1975. The Prime Minister of India heads the Zakir Husain Memorial Trust which looks after the affairs of the college. The college shifted to its present premises in 1991. In 1975, the college was taken over by the Dr. Zakir Husain Memorial College Trust and was renamed as Zakir Husain College between Evening Classes. Dr. Zakir Husain was a great scholar, educationist and patriot who held the highest office of the President of Indian Republic 1957-69. Zakir Husain Post Graduate Evening College is managed by the Dr. Zakir Husain Memorial Trust. The Prime Minister of India is the Chairman of the trust.
The college actively encourages young boys and girls to strive for the attainment of their highest potential by providing the impetus for them to become worthy citizens of India. Many of our alumni have excelled in vaious fields of Arts, Culture and Science, and quite a few have obtained prestigious positions in the Public and Private sectors. To cite a few cases, Mr. Hasan Ahmad, the Chairman of Delhi State Industries Development Corporation, Mr. Anees Durrani, a member of Film Censor Board, Mr. Haroon Yousuf, a minister in the Delhi Government, Mr. Shakti Chand Sharma, Principal of RL Evening college and Mr. Ramesh Sharma (Divik Ramesh), Principal of Motilal Nehru College, etc., all have been students of Evening College.
