Admission Notices

Environmental problems and issues require the concerted efforts of experts from not just one but several disciplines. Whether it be issues of biodiversity conservation, habitat loss and pollution or developing strategies for sustainable development, or rehabilitation of displaced people due to developmental activities, it is increasingly being realized that best results are achieved if the problems are addressed from an inter-disciplinary and multi-disciplinary perspective. Recognizing the need for this, the School of Environmental Studies was established in 2001 in the University of Delhi, Delhi, India to act as an umbrella organization to coordinate the activities of its constituents viz. Department of Environmental Biology, Centre for Environmental Management of Degraded Ecosystems (CEMDE), and Centre for Interdisciplinary Studies of Mountain & Hill Environment (CISMHE).

    Objectives of SES
To serve as an interdisciplinary institution for promoting research and training in environment and ecology leading to the award of M.A., M.Sc., M.Phil. and Ph.D. degrees of the University.
To evolve specific environmental management/regulation packages through interdisciplinary teams for specific economic activities.
To formulate and conduct short and long-term diploma/certificate courses in disciplines/sectors interfacing with environment and ecology for in-service and pre-service personnel.
To interface through suitable institutional arrangements with national and international institutions, UN organizations and Industries to carry out programmes/projects on global, regional and national environmental issues.

The School of Environmental Studies is housed in a part of the sprawling building adjacent to the Botany Department, opposite to Physics Department. The building also houses two of its constituents- Department of Environmental Biology and the Centre for Environmental Management of Degraded Ecosystems (CEMDE). The Centre for Interdisciplinary Studies of Mountain & Hill Environment (CISMHE) is located in the Academic Research Center (ARC) building, 3rd floor on Patel Chest Road, opposite to Khalsa College premises. Science labs, computer lab and classrooms of SES are also located on the 3rd Floor of the ARC building.

The School has a 100 seater, state of the art auditorium for seminars and workshops and a modest, but growing library with > 400 holdings. The faculty and research students have also access to the Yamuna and Aravalli Biodiversity Parks, unique eco-parks being maintained by the Delhi Development Authority (DDA) and its scientific matters overseen by CEMDE of the School. These parks provide opportunities for field-oriented research by faculty and research students. The SES is in the process of developing its teaching and research labs and has acquired instruments such as double beam UV spectrophotometer, electronic balance, PCR machine with gel doc system, biological and stereomicroscope with image analyzer, ultra pure water system, a high capacity server and eight PCs, through UGC grant for its innovative M.A./M.Sc. programme.
