NIFT has further spread its wings globally with the opening of an international centre at Mauritius.
NIFT has set academic standards and excelled in thought leadership by providing a pool of creative genius and technically competent professionals. The Institute provides a common platform for fashion education, research and training.
National Institute of Fashion Technology (NIFT), Delhi was established in 1987 under the Ministry of Textiles, Government of India. The immediate objective was to fulfil the long-felt needs of the export oriented garment industry to train manpower in fashion designing, garment manufacturing technology and apparel marketing and merchandising.
The hallmark of a NIFT graduate is that he or she can think boldly and independently and come out with extremely creative designs of much higher standard, not to speak of initiatives in the areas of strategic planning, garment manufacturing technology and response to consumer tastes and preferences.
The high-value being attached to NIFT graduates has created its own impact in different parts of the country and led to a demand for the setting up of new centres of NIFT in other parts of the country. New centres were established at Mumbai, Chennai, Calcutta, Hyderabad, Gandhinagar and Bangalore.
Having completed more than a decade of its existence, NIFT is now on the threshold of entering a new phase of activities in all its centres. The primary objective behind the setting up of NIFT was to assist the fashion industry in India to meet the challenges of industrial competitiveness on a global plane. And so far, it has succeeded in providing professional expertise to the industry, which is vital in the immediate context of our national aim of strengthening its potential of meeting foreign exchange earnings and generating employment.
