Miranda House is a prestigious women's college located in New Delhi, India, and is a constituent college of the University of Delhi. Established in 1948, it has consistently been ranked among the top colleges in the country, achieving the number one position in the National Institutional Ranking Framework (NIRF) for seven consecutive years as of 2023.

History

The college was founded by Sir Maurice Gwyer, the then vice-chancellor of the University of Delhi. The name "Miranda" was inspired by several personal and cultural references, including the actress Carmen Miranda and a character from Shakespeare's play "The Tempest." The foundation stone was laid by Lady Edwina Mountbatten on March 7, 1948. Initially starting with just 33 students, the college has grown significantly, with over 4,000 students enrolled today.

Academic Programs

Miranda House offers a wide range of undergraduate and postgraduate programs, including BA, B.Sc, and B.Com, as well as various honors courses. The college is known for pioneering science education for women at the University of Delhi, starting its B.Sc. Honours (Botany) course in 1948. The curriculum emphasizes liberal education across social sciences, humanities, and basic sciences.
