The Indian Institute for Human Settlements (IIHS), a Section 25 not-for-profit company has been brought into existence, nurtured and led by a group of eminent personalities from all walks of life, most of whom are providing their services pro bono publico.The Indian Institute for Human Settlements, the promoter of the IIHS University, is a Section 25 not-for-profit company under the Indian Companies Act. It has been brought into existence, nurtured and led by a group of eminent Indians from all walks of life, who are providing their services pro bono publico. In addition, these individuals have made generous contributions to the initial corpus.

IIHS was incorporated to address the multi-dimensional and interdisciplinary challenge of urbanisation so that the country’s administration can respond with wise and timely solutions. Currently, discussions are at an advanced stage with the Government of India on the regulatory framework under which the IIHS University will be incorporated.

IIHS Vision and Mission
India’s urbanisation is the second largest rural to urban transition in human history. By the middle of the century, at least 800 million Indians will live in cities and they will constitute more than half of India’s population. This is not just a demographic transition. Urbanisation is fundamentally changing India’s economy, society, culture, natural and built environments as well as politics. Our national development now hinges on urbanisation being handled with wisdom.

Launching a set of core Urban missions in 2015 including Smart Cities, AMRUT, PMAY, HRIDAY and Swachh Bharat Abhiyan, Prime Minister Narendra Modi said, ‘it would have been very beneficial if we had recognised urbanisation as an opportunity 25–30 years earlier and treated it as a foundation’.

In an urban century, this is a timely realisation for India and the world. Yet, two core challenges stand in the way of this urban transformation.
