Diploma Promoting Rational Drug Use (DPRDU) - The rational use of drugs has been defined by the World Health Organization in 1985. It is to prescribe the most appropriate product, obtained on time, at an affordable price for all, delivered correctly and administrated according to the proper dosage and during the appropriate duration. On the global scale, it is estimated that 50% of drugs are prescribed, distributed and sold in an incorrect manner, whilst one third of the world population does not have access to essential drugs.
Rational drug use is defined as that of prescribing the appropriate drug that is available at the right time and at a price people can afford; it should be dispensed correctly, taken by the patient in the right dose at the right intervals and for the right length of time. The appropriate drug must be effective, and of acceptable quality and safety.
