Certification Dress Maker (CDM) - A dressmaker is responsible for creating dresses in a variety of styles. Those who study dressmaking may work as seamstresses, tailors or fashion designers. They can be employed by clothing manufacturers, sewing shops, fashion design firms, department store or boutiques. Dressmakers can also be self-employed. On-the-job training, workshops and fashion design courses or degrees are most important for aspiring dressmakers to learn this craft.While dressmaking courses and degrees are popular outside the United States, few colleges or universities in the country offer programs for aspiring dressmakers. No formal degree is required to become a dressmaker; however, interested candidates might opt to pursue a degree in fashion design or a narrower skills-based certificate program.
