    M.Sc., APPLIED MICROBIOLOGY

    (Eligibility:A candidate who has passed a Bachelor degree in Science with Microbiology/ Botany/ Zoology/ Environmental Science/ Biotechnology/ Biochemistry/ Chemistry/ Home Science/ Nutrition and Dietics/ B.Sc., MLT/ Genetics/ Bio – informatics/ Marine Biology/ Or a Bachelor degree in Agriculture/ Animal Science/ Medicine or Veterinary Science/ Pharmacy and including Indian forms of Medicines and Homeopathy degree of this University or any of the above degree of any other University accepted by the Syndicate are permitted to appear and qualify for the M.Sc., Applied Microbiology.

    The Department of Microbiology was established in the year 1993 affiliated to the University of Madras, to impart quality education with parallel emphasis on ethical guidelines. The PG course was then started in 1996. In 1999 the department came under Periyar University and it was recognized as research centre in 2002. It fosters research in the key area of Medical Bacteriology, Virology, Immunotechnology, Microbial Biotechnology and Environmental Sciences. The Department is committed and indulged with the prime goal of achieving placement oriented education with recent trends coupled with discipline and human values.

    Facilities

    During the course of last 17 years the Department has blossomed into a great centre of learning with excellent infrastructure. Now the Department has flourished with 9 staff members. Qualified faculty members and excellent infrastructural facilities have gone into making for its disciplined academic activity. Laboratories are furnished with latest equipments to conduct the practical & basic research in various fields. Currently nine & three scholars are undergoing M.Phil and Ph.D Programmes respectively.

    Department Achievements

    The Department association ‘Microcosmos’ often organizes various programs such as seminars, guest lectures, industrial visit, quiz and debates with eminent scientists to get benefited from information, ideas and insights.
    Department conducts work shop on recent techniques every year to mold the students to meet the expectations of the industries.

    Students participate and present scientific papers in national and international seminars and conferences organized by various institutions.

    Many Students have proved & excelled with University ranks.

    Three student projects were sanctioned by Tamil Nadu State Council for Science and Technology (TNSTC).

    PG students have done their projects in renowned institutes like IISC, NIMHANS, Indian Institute of Horticultural Research (ICAR) Bangalore, ICC&Z, Grow More Biotech, Microlabs, Hosur. National Veterinary College and Research Institute, Namakkal, National Institute of Nutrition (ICMR) and Stanley Medical College, Chennai etc.,

    To develop extra curricular activities students participate in cultural events, sports meet and have proven their track records in sports too in University level.

    They are also active member of NSS and involve in social service activities.

    Our Students have been placed in renowned institutes like Biocon, clinical laboratories, Pharma companies, Beverage companies, Food and Leather industries, Biofertilizer and Biopesticide companies, Academics and Research and Development.

    To update the knowledge and improve the skills in teaching, the faculty members attend orientation courses conducted by the college.

    They also actively participate in the scientific workshops, seminars, symposia and present scientific papers. They have published papers in reputed national and international journals.

    The deliberation provides opportunity for disseminating progress in identifying avenues for translating academic progress
