Eligibility: A candidate who has passed a 3-year degree examination in Arts and Science conducted by the Mangalore University or any other University recognised as equivalent thereto by the Mangalore University, shall be eligible for admission to the degree of Bachelor of Education, provided - He/ she has secured not less than 50% marks taking into consideration the marks in all the subjects of all the three years examinations excluding internal and class examination marks (45% in the case of SC/ST/Physically handicapped candidates).He /she has studied any one of the languages and two out of the three electives among the subjects specified below:

Languages: English, Hindi, Urdu, Sanskrit.

Electives: Physics, Chemistry, Botany, Microbiology, Zoology, Mathematics, History, Political Science, Sociology, Geography, Economics, English, Kannada, Hindi, Sanskrit, Urdu.
Candidates who have obtained the B.A. / B.Sc., degree from Universities outside the state of Karnataka shall have studied any ONE of the Languages and at least TWO elective subjects listed above. Further, they shall have studied one of those electives by appearing in the university examinations for at least two years and the principal subject for all the three years.

Duration of the Programme :The duration of the B.Ed., programme extends over a period of one academic year as a regular course of study of not less than 210 working days.

SCOPE AND PROSPECTS

A majority of the population in India is still illiterate. With both the government and private sector giving a lot of prominence for primary and higher education, the opportunities are immense in the field. Innumerable new schools are opening every year and there is a severe shortage of teachers to run these schools. After completing B.Ed. course, the candidate can get employment as a school teacher anywhere in India. Trained teachers are in great demand all over the world and the opportunities are ample in developed countries too, specially in U.K. and Australia.

India is one of the most populous countries in the world and a majority of the population in India is still illiterate. With both the government and private sector giving a lot of prominence for primary and higher education, the opportunities are immense in the field. Teaching is a well paid and dignified profession. Innumerable new schools are opening every year and there is a severe shortage of teachers to run these schools. After completing B.Ed. course, the candidate can get employment as a school teacher any where in India. Teachers can also be self employed as private tutors working on part time basis. Trained teachers are in great demand all over the world and the opportunities are ample in developed countries too, especially in U.K. and Australia.

 

2.Under the Area of Specialisation (Edn.6) the student may choose any one subject from among the following:

   1. Educational and Vocational Guidance

   2. Population Education

   3. Environmental Education

Attendance:

a) A candidate shall be considered to have satisfied the requirement of attendance for the year if he/she attends not less than 75 percent of the number of Theory and Practical classes actually held, separately, in each of the subjects, up to the end of the academic year.

b) A candidate who does not satisfy the requirement of attendance in theory or practicals even in one subject shall not be permitted to take the whole University Examination and he/she shall be required to repeat the course in the subsequent year.

c) A candidate who does not complete the work in the practicals satisfactorily will not be permitted to take the University Examination until he/she completes the practicals in the subsequent year/s.

Scheme of Examination:

The examination for the B.Ed. shall be held at the end of the academic year of the course. A supplementary examination may also be held in the middle of the academic year.

  Internal Assessment: 1.The average of two tests and one assignment in the theory papers (Edn. 1 to Edn. 6) will be considered for Internal Assessment.

2.The evaluation in the form of Grade of the performance of the candidates in Edn. 9 A, B, C, D, E shall be certified by the Head of the Institution and communicated to the University along with the internal assessment marks.

 

Practicum: Edn.7 and Edn.8.

 

Practice in teaching and related Assignments:
Each student shall practice teaching in a secondary school in a block period of about Six Weeks or spread over with two blocks of teaching.

Every student teacher shall plan and execute 15 lessons in secondary schools, in each subject of specialisation under Edn. 7 and Edn. 8. In this regard, the college has good tie-up with the local Kannada and English medium secondary schools.

Each student teacher shall develop a resource unit/unit plan with unit test in each of the subjects of specialisation.
The University shall conduct the practical examination for papers, Edn. 7 and Edn. 8 in which the candidate shall teach one lesson for each course of one class period in the secondary school.

Minimum for a pass:

No candidate is declared to have passed the B.Ed. degree examination, unless he/she obtains not less than 35% marks separately in (i) University examination of Edn. 1 to Edn. 8 and (ii) internal assessment of Edn. 6, Edn. 7, Edn. 8 and 40% in the aggregate of University Examination and Internal Assessment put together
or the declaration of class, the marks obtained in Theory, Practicum and Internal Assessment shall be considered together

 

Percentage of Marks for Declaring Class:

First Class with Distinction : not less than 70% of the aggregate marks
First Class : not less than 60% of the aggregate marks
Second Class : not less than 50% of the aggregate marks and for repeaters.
