    DEPARTMENT OF ENGLISH

    The Department of English was established in the year 1973 and BA English Literature course was started in the year 1983. The Department offers MPhil and PhD as Part Time Programme. From 1986-87, the Department has been producing excellent results in the University Examinations. The students of BA English Literature achieved 100% result in Bharathiar University Examinations held in April 2005.

    All the members of teaching staff are highly qualified- 5 Teachers with Ph D and one Teacher with M Phil degree. Two UGC-sponsored National-Level Seminars- one on "Comparative Literature and Literary Theory" and another on Drama- "Dynamics of Heroism" were conducted in August 2003 and September 2003 respectively.

    The Staff of the Department have produced 12 PhDs and 11 MPhils under Part Time programme and several M Phils under the distance education stream.
    The staff adopted a student from a socially and economically weaker section. He completed his UG and PG course in Chemistry. Now, he is working as a lecturer in Chemistry in Bannari Amman Institute of Technology, Sathyamangalam.

    The teachers serve as members of various committees such as the College Committee, Research Committee, Sports Committee, Staff and Students' Welfare and Grievance Redressal Committee, etc.
    The Department offers "Professional English and Personality Development" as Extra-departmental course.
    The Department achieved 100% result in Part II English in April 2006 under the autonomous system.

    The MA English with Computer Applications Course( Un-Aided) was started in the year 2003-04.This course enriches the students not only in their communicative skills but also in the use of Computers and the Internet. The course instills in the students the flexibility, analytical skills and confidence needed to be effective thinkers and problem solvers. The study of English Literature and Language is fundamental to liberal education. The course guides students in the study of literary works- poems, plays, fiction, essays and helps in the development of communication skills. The core curriculum is designed to enable students to become informed citizens and active members of society.

    Most of the members of faculty have registered for PhD. The Alumni Association meets regularly and most of the Alumni are well placed.
    A Research Club - STARS (Scholars' Transformation After Research Studies) was inaugurated on 18-9-2007. The staff and students present papers every month.

    The Department offers BEC (Business English Certificate) from 2005 onwards.
    There is a very good Language Lab and students make use of it.
