The start was slow but the inertia was explosive as is evident from the history of Government College of Science, Raipur, which was founded in the year 1948. The barracks near the Old Museum and the Government High School were the stepping-stones from where the journey of Higher Education in Science in Central India was started. Late Prof. Umadas Mukherji was the Founder Principal who was given the responsibility to start the College of Science from the minimum of every thing. To begin with, the college was affiliated to the Sagar University Sagar imparted 2 year education, called Intermediate Science (I. Sc.), which was upgraded to graduate level in 1950. The initial enrollment was 126. Biology, Physics, Chemistry and Maths were the only options available at the U.G. level. In the year 1956, a new wave started with the commencement of P.G. classes in Botany, Zoology, Chemistry, Physics and Mathematics. Hindi (1960), English, Economics and History (1961) were introduced at the P.G. level but this drift was for a short period and ended in 1975. Soon the college returned to the original discipline of “Science”. Of the two new subjects, Geology was introduced at the U.G. level in 1956 and P.G. level in 1967 while Defence Studies was introduced at U.G. level 1972 and P.G. level 1987. The institution attained the status of Model Science College in 1984 and became Autonomous in 1987. It has the privilege of being the Leading College of Chhattishgarh.
The institution has a sprawling area extending upto 83 acres. Its distinctive feature and basic advantage is that it has a huge campus in an environment friendly atmosphere. The campus has magnificent buildings, a hostels, a botanical garden, sprawling play grounds, an indoor court, a gymnasium and vehicle parking sheds. Residential accommodation is provided for Professors, Assistant Professors and supporting staff. The campus has four hostels of which one of the hostels for women housed the Geology and Defence Studies departments till the year 2000. With the formation of the new state, it now houses the Directorate of Higher Education. The teacher’s hostel in the campus, previously occupied by the Additional Director’s office now houses the Directorate of Sports and Culture. The other three hostels accomodate only boys.
The college has highly qualified staff members. Presently 77 staff members of sanctioned posts of 92 are working. Of these 43 are Ph.D. holders and 03 are M.Phil degree holders. The amount of research work undertaken in this college over the years surpasses the works of many university Research departments both qualitatively and quantitatively. The college seeks to lay claim on quality and quantity without compromising either. The qualitative assessment of research work is evident by some of the staff members winning Young Scientist Awards, Major research fellowships, attending seminars and conferences, publishing research papers in National & International Journals, referees in prestigious Journals.
