The normal duration of the doctoral program is four years (see Fig. 1). The first two years of the program are devoted to coursework, requiring full-time residency. During residency, students will engage in teaching and/or Faculty research for which they will receive stipend. Doctoral students are expected to undertake courses worth 44 credits over these two years (see Fig. 2). After successful completion of the coursework, there will be qualifying exams to test competency in the field/discipline and in the area of specialisation. After successfully clearing the qualifying exams, students will be awarded the status of ‘PhD Candidate’. Thereafter, candidates would prepare and defend a dissertation proposal within a maximum period of one semester. During the candidacy period, candidates will work in consultation with their dissertation advisor(s) and a dissertation advisory committee.
