Statistics has become an indispensable tool in all areas of scientific research. The role of statistics in synergizing the building blocks of the national development is very important. The course aims at training students in theoretical and applied aspects of statistics with due emphasis on the computational aspects with an aim to train them to take up challenges in academic research as well as in industrial organization. Hence the course is designed as a synergy of statistics, mathematics and computation.
The 80-credit PG programme includes sophisticated computational facilities. The computer laboratory is equipped with high speed Internet connection. There are as many as 50 computer terminals. It facilitates SPSS and all major open source Statistics software. Among the taught courses are: Probability and distribution theory; Real analysis and linear algebra; Directional and spatial data analysis; Measure theory and probability; Design and response surface experiments; Operations research; Order statistics and non-parametric tests; Stochastic processes; Categorical data analysis; Environmental and national development statistics; Statistical process and quality control; Demography; Bayesian inference; Reliability theory; Econometrics; Actuarial statistics; and, statistics in finance.
