Braja Mohan Thakur Law College (Autonomous) , Purnia is situated on the borders of Bangladesh, Nepal and India. The College is registered under the Society Registration act and affiliated since the year 1982 and permanent affiliation granted to this college since 1988 by the Govt. of Bihar.This Law college is recognized u/s 2(f) and12(b) of the UGC act 1956. Permanent affiliation granted by the Bar council of India for Law Course.The students of this college have been awarded Gold Medal, Silver Medal State award in Moot court competitions.The high standards that it sets in have already established this College as one of the best College among all National Institutions in the country. The BMT Law College (Autonomous) is an example of autonomy and accountability which is well equipped with state-of-art infrastructure.
The education of law is actually a science. It is associated with human experience because of its closeness to the all round spheres of human life. Law draws its strength from various kinds of human activities making it an interesting discipline for students.
The BMT Law college (Autonomous), Purnia aspires innovating teaching in remote and backward area of Bihar to equip students with qualitative skills and capabilities to understand and implementation of enactment, enforcement and interpretation of Law.
The establishment of this college is just like a dream come true. It was also a day for BMTLC to dream bigger and higher aims BMTLC is the first autonomous college in Bihar. The autonomy has been granted by UGC, New Delhi in the month of June, 2009. As a result of autonomy the college is going to start new courses in the field of Law, Management, HR and Personality Development. As per guidelines of the UGC, the college will regulate all the academic activities like admission, registration conduct of examination, publication of result, issuance of migration and provisional certificates. Members of the Board of Management, Academic Council, Financial Committee, Board of Studies, the faculty and administrative staff have labored hard to make the college a pioneer institution in the state of Bihar. our college is dedicated to its vision and mission and it becomes able to produce twenty batches of LL.B graduates working in different legal arena of country.
Besides the autonomous status granted by UGC, this college has permanent affiliation by the Ministry of Human Resources of Govt. of Bihar dated 18.03.1989, permanent recognition granted by the Bar council of India, New Delhi dated 27.11.1993 to run the law courses and is a permanent affiliated unit of B.N Mandal University, Madhepura.I take the opportunity to welcome all the aspiring minds who want to pursue their career in law and wish them brilliant success in life. Once again, I welcome all of you wish success in your profession as well as in other spheres of life. I also take the opportunity to observe that students who have studied and obtained legal degrees have also earned gold and silver medal in the moot court competition in the State of Bihar as well as other states. Apart from legal teaching, the students of this college also participated in social services like legal awareness among the masses, flood relief operation, programs relating literacy expansion and so on.
Braja Mohan Thakur S/o Late Pandit Ganesh Dutt Thakur alias Bacharu Thakur was born on 14.2.1889 at village Araria Bairgachi, Araria, Dist. Purnia (now Araria).Mr. Thakur belonged to medium class family. He started his educational career by dint of his own efforts and Endeavour at Araria. He passed Entrance Examination from Araria High School and was placed in first division. Thereafter he went to Bhagalpur, got admitted in T.N.J. College, Bhagalpur (Now TNB College) in the faculty of Arts and completed his graduation from T.N.J. College securing first class. Thereafter with the help of Raja of Srinagar Deorhi he went to Calcutta for higher educations and there he got Master's Degree from Calcutta University in the year 1918 in Philosophy saving special subject Sankhy and Vedanta and was placed in 2nd Class.
In Calcutta with the efforts of Sri Thakur Santan Dharm Vidyalaya and Saswat Khetriya Vidyalaya were established and he held the post of Headmaster of both the institutions in Calcutta. Mr. Thakur was appointed as translator of Government of Bengal. Thereafter the vice Chancellor of Calcutta University and Hon'ble Justice of Calcutta High Court Sri Ashutosh Mukherjee appointed him as the member of council of Post Graduate in Calcutta University and became the professor of Calcutta University in Hindi Subject. At that time Dr. Rajendra Prasad, the first President of India, was enrolled as a student of B. L. Course in Calcutta University and Mr. Thakur also took admission is bosom friends with warm heart. They established Vidwat Samiti in Calcutta and Dr. Rajendra Prasad was the president of the said Samiti and Mr. Thakur was the Secretary and through the said samiti they fought out the social taboos and encouraged the students who n B. L. course in evening shift. Dr. Rajendra Prasad was senior to Sri Thakur by one year but both of them came in close to each other wanted to go for higher studies in foreign countries. On the request and appeal made by Sri Thakur, Raja Bahadur Krityanand Singh of Banaily and Raja Tank Nath Choudhary created separately a chair of Maithili in Calcutta University. Sir Ashutosh Mukherjee, the then Vice-Chancellor of Calcutta University, not only approved the project but helped a lot in establishing more academic chairs. Mr. Thakur succeeded in his efforts to include Maithili Subject in Calcutta University (vide proceeding of Education Committee dated 7.8.1919 and 8.8.1919). Mr. Thakur was deputed by the Calcutta University to go to Banaras, Allahabad and Mithila at the expense of the University to make collection of printed books and manuscript in Maithil to be used as Text Books of M.A. standard (vide proceeding of A. C. dated 9.9.1919 of Calcutta University). Mr. Thakur collected much books on Masithili and got them deposited in Calcutta University. He was also appointed by the University as examiner and question setter in Maithili subject of M.A. standard. Besides Hindi Mr. Thakur was also a good scholar of English, Sanskrit, Bengali, Maithili ad Urdu too. He was the first M.A. B.L. degree holder in old Purnia district.
Raja Kalikanand Singh of Srinagar Estate helped Mr. Thakur in meeting his educational expenses in Calcutta and later on requested him to join Bar of District Court, Purnia in the year 1929 because there were large number of cases pending at Purnia and Mr. Thakur agreed to the request of Raja Kalika Nand Singh and left Calcutta University and joined Purnia district court and mostly took up civil cases. In the mean time he was appointed as Hon’ble Justice of Indore High Court but due to sudden death of his father he could not join the post of the Hon’ble Justice and continued his practice at Purnia till 1965. While practicing as a pleader at Purnia he was life long member of Purnia Zila school and was elected as Secretary of Kalanand Vidyalaya Garhbanaili. He was attorney of Raj Darbhanga, Raj Maldwar, Raj Banaili, Raja Sri Nagar and also became Government Pleader at Purnia. He was facilitated with a Tamrapatra by the renowned socio-cultural organization Chetna Samiti, Patna in the year 1972. Mr. Thakur was a famous legal luminary not only of Purnia Bar, but also the whole of Bihar. He was a son of the soil of Purnia who breathed his last on the 9th December 1977, leaving behind his inspiration and aspiration. After his demise, his son Birendra Mohan Thakur dreamt of establishing a law college in Purnia in his loving memory to facilitate legal education in this backward region to cater to the legal needs for common masses and accordingly the college was established on 14.03.1982 with the moral support of colleagues, friends & well-wishers.

Under the provision of the advocate Act, 1961,the Bar council of India has prescribed a three year law course BASED ON SEMESTER SYSTEM.
Accordingly, University Grants Commission has revised the Syllabus for three year law course for its implementation.
I. An admitted student is required to undergo a regular course of study and attend required number of classes in each semester in order to be eligible to appear in the Examination to be conducted by the college for each of the Three parts Divided in six semesters and fashioned in the following manner.
1. LL.B Part-I -- Semester One Semester Two
2. LL.B Part-II -- Semester Three Semester Four
3. LL.B Part-III-- Semester Five Semester Six
II. A student has to take twenty-eight papers ( subjects ) in all, which shall include eighteen compulsory papers, four clinical papers and six optional papers from among the list of Optional papers and also any additional papers prescribed by this college from time to time:
III. The three year course leading to degree in law shall be conducted in semester system is not less then 15 weeks for each semester with not less then 30 class hours per week including Tutorials, Moot court room exercise, written test presentation of project work, seminars, provided there shall be at least 24 Lecture hours per week..
(i) In no case a candidate will be eligible for admission to any of the courses of the college; on the basis of TRANSFER CERTIFICATE from any institution imparting LL.B Course.
(ii) No student who has been admitted to the college for LL.B degree program shall be permitted to pursue any other course such as Master's or Diploma course simultaneously.
Provided that it is in agreement with the amendments made from time to time by the Bar council of India regarding the exemption of courses.
Provided further that any short period part time certificate course on language, computer science or computer application of an institute or any diploma/certificate course run by a centre of Development certificate course run by this Autonomous college shall be accepted.

The general norms for LL.M curriculum is based on the recommendation of CDC of ugc. Students shall have to do the dissertation, the practical all the four core courses and six papers from a single optional group. The suggestion that students may be given the discretion to opt inter-group is not acceptable . Whether it is teaching practice of law, administration of justice or management of legal counseling in a firm, specialization is a must. A thorough knowledge in a particular branch of law is the objective of LLM programme. As CDC has said, the justification for semesterisation at master's level cannot be overemphasized.
