Rangia College, Rangia was established in the year 1963, Rangia College, Rangia is affiliated to Gauhati University, Guwahati
Rangia College is the premier institution of higher education on the north bank of the Brahmaputra in the district of Kamrup. Founded on August 5, 1963, the college has rendered pioneering services to the community by catering to the needs of the vast and extensive area inhabited predominantly by socially and economically backward segments of the population. Rangia is a historically and strategically important place occupying a prominent position in the history of pre-independent as well as post independent Assam. Rangia is the nerve center of trade and commerce in North Kamrup with a sound communication network. The establishment of the college came about rather late chiefly because of the economic backwardness of the surrounding locality. However, the effort of establishing a college got momentum by the late fifties as a result of untiring and selfless dedication of a band of enthusiasts under the inspiring leadership of Late Siddhinath Sarma, a giant among political heavy weights of the freedom movement who was popularly known as the Chanakya of Assam politics. And finally, 5th of August, 1963 marked the ceremonial inauguration of the college in the premises of Rangia High School (now H. S. School) amidst unprecedented jubilation and fanfare. With this a new chapter was added to the educational history of the Rangia Circle. Since then the college has been a torch-bearer in the domain of higher education of a vast and extensive area and marching on its onward journey with the solemn pledge of a mission of transmission of knowledge, wisdom, skill and competence from one generation to another.
During the forty years of its existence, the college has made significant progress in fulfilment of its avowed objective of imparting higher education in Arts, Science and Commerce to a substantially large section of students belonging to socialy and economically backward groups of the area. After the humble beginning in the Rangia High School premises, the college was shifted to its own spacious campus at the Bongaon reserve away from the noises of the urban surrounding. The scenic and picturesquely sylvan atmosphere of the site added glow and glory to the institution in as much as it inspired a rare sense of urgency in the college community as a whole. This resulted in a devoted approach towards building the institution and the college was brought under deficit system of grants-in-aid in September 1969 in just six years time, which in itself is a record.
Since its inception, the college has maintained a steady growth. The Science stream was introduced in 1985 and was brought under Govt. deficit grants-in-aid in 1992. It is pertinent to mention here that the “Siddhinath Sarma Vigyan Bhavan” where the science faculty is located was named after the legendary freedom fighter and the chief architect of the college and the Bhavan was formally declared open by the then Chief Minister of Assam, late Hiteswar Saikia. Meanwhile, the college completed twenty-five years of its existence in August 1988, and the Silver Jubilee celebrations were organized in January, 1989 with great enthusiasm.
With the introduction of the commerce stream in 1996, Rangia College is now a full-fledged three-stream college with lots of promises to be fulfilled in the years to come. The history of forty years of Rangia College is a tale of vicissitudes of multitudes. In the initial years of its establishment, the college had to grow bit by bit in view of absence of outstanding donors. Whatever shape and form the college could achieve at the beginning was all due to humble contributions made by public in general. It is worthwhile to mention that the destiny of the college was guided at that crucial period by none other than Sri Birendra Nath Bordoloi, the illustrious son of the illustrious father, the Bharat Ratna Late Gopinath Bordoloi, the first Chief Minister of post independent Assam. Under his stewardship as principal for long 17 years, the college made noteworthy progress both in terms of physical development and academic achievements.
On the midnight of April 15th, 1975 the college had to come to terms with the fury of nature when the entire building complex was severely bruised and battered by a high velocity cyclonic storm leaving the campus in a dilapidated condition. The college authority marshalled exemplary determination to undertake and complete the reconstruction process in record time without any cyclone damage grant forth coming.
The college has endeavored to maintain a very healthy and cordial relation with the neighbourhood, and contributed in its own humble way towards academic awareness in particular and social welfare in general. That the college authority in 1993 parted with a plot of 30 bighas of landed property for construction of a Civil Hospital speaks volumes of a humanitarian gesture for a noble cause. We are aware that the problems of and the challenges before higher educational institutes like ours are many and varied. We have a firm determination to cope up to these manfully notwithstanding the constraints-infrastructural and environmental. We have a vision of turning this institution of semi- urban base into a centre of excellence in a decade’s time by elevating its academic status through introduction of career- oriented courses and also opening PG courses in select subjects. We also look forward to augmenting its infrastuctural base with amenities like an Auditorium, a mini sports complex and hostel accommodation for boys and girls.
In the present day context, the question of assessment and accreditation has assumed quite an enormous significance. The institutions of higher learning like this one need to go through a process of quality check to prove their credentials in terms of performance and achievements. This process, we hope, will bring about an element of transparency and credibility that will contribute in a big way to maximize their potentials. This is why we go in for this self- study and self-analysis and for ourselves for Assessment and Accreditation by NAAC on 23rd and 24th September 2004 and awarded by B++ grade.
