Anandaram Dhekial Phookan College (A.D.P. College) is the name of a temple of learning, the very utterance of which brings ‘Ananda’ i.e. ‘Joy’ in mind. The college is named after the illustrious son of Asom, Anandaram Dhekial Phookan. The Asam Sahitya Sabha Session held at Nagaon in 1959, through a resolution, urged the people to establish a college in the name of that hallowed personality to bring to light his wishes of spreading knowledge. Thus the college was established at first as Night College, and later on transformed to Day College with Night Section as a shift. During the tenure of late Abdul Hye as Principal, the Science stream was opened in 1978 to meet the aspiration of the students of the district.
Situated away from the din and bustle of the town and on the bank of the river Kollong, the college is an ideal one for academic pursuit. Students from urban and rural areas have been converging to this institution for decades since to pursue higher studies. It is our proud privilege to mention that our college has been awarded ‘B’ grade by National Assessment and Accreditation Council in 2004.We organise an annual lecture in memory of Anandaram Dhekial Phookan which is delivered by a person of eminence in the field of literature.
Goals and Objectives of the College
The Mission and goals of the college are to disseminate education in humanities and science to meet the needs and aspirations of the people of Asom in general and of Nagaon district in particular, irrespective of caste, creed, religion and sex.The college was initially started in 1959 as a Night college in Arts stream with the initial objective of offering scope to the earner-learners who were unable to attend day time institutions in spite of their strong desire to pursue higher education.Later on, to meet the needs and aspirations of the growing population, the college was converted to a Day college in Arts stream in 1964 with night section as a shift. The Science section was introduced in 1978.
A new era arrives in the college
Ushering into a new era of vocationalization of higher education under the dynamic leadership of our Principal Dr. S. U. Ahmed, the college has introduced two new vocational subjects (1) Bio-Technology (2) Computer Application at the degree level from this session to be offered any one of these as an elective subject in the Pass Course. This has been done with keeping in mind the reluctance on the part of students to go for basic science because of dearth of employment avenues. With the introduction of vocational subjects we feel that students will have ample scope in procuring a livelihood after the completion of the course. Short-term vocational courses in following subjects were introduced in college under U.G.C programme from the session 2006-2007.
