Ujani Majuli Kherkatia College (Acronym U.M.K. College), Ratanpur Miri, Majuli was established in 1973 in the eastern upper part of Majuli, the river island under Jorhat district of Assam. Situated in a completely rural surrounding enriched by beautiful natural scenery in an areas of 27 bighas of land, the college was started from a small number of students of higher secondary level in a few class rooms and office buildings constructed with arduous attempt of some dedicated villagers of the locality., It was a time when there was no institution for higher education in the neighborhood and student of poor tribal communities that dominate this region remain deprived of collegiate education. Therefore the mishings, who are the major and leading tribal communities here, organized all other social communities who gave a combined effort to give birth to this institution. Teachers, principals and employees of the college rendered their valuable service for long fifteen years without remuneration depending on few public donations from time to time in cash and kind. Though the college is situated in a very interior place where surface communication is still poor, it has imparted higher education to a considerable large area of Assam including two districts of Jorhat and Lakhimpur.The college received pre-degree affiliation in 1983 and degree affiliation in 1987 under Dibrugarh University. It was included under section 2(f) of the UGC in August 1993 and under 12(B) in 1998. The college was awarded Grade (C+) by NAAC (National Assessment and Accreditation Council) in 2004. Now the college has full fledged class rooms, staff common room, Principal and Vice- Principal’s chambers in Assam type buildings and a separate library with ground floor RCC and first floor Assam type construction, a canteen etc. There are hostels for boys and girls separately. The college has been able to provide amenities to students and proper ambiances for study as well as for extracurricular activities. The college imparts education on H.S. & Degree level in arts with provision for major course in Assamese, Economics, History, Political Science and Sociology.
