Admission Notices

The name of the College commemorates the history of amalgamation of two Colleges, viz., Jorhat College and New Jorhat College, both established in 1962. The initial effort was that of a few students and teachers of the Night Section of J.B. College, Jorhat, who, with the support of a section of the enlightened public, decided to establish a fullfledged Night College called Jorhat College, with a view primarily to catering to the need of the students from poor economic background engaged in day time jobs just after completing their Secondary or Higher Secondary education. A few of the master minds behind this plan were those of Surendranath Bharali, Anil Ch. Baruah, Surendranath Bordoloi, Hariprasad Neog, Dr. Neelkamal Bezbaruah, Arun Goswami, Devaprasad Baruah, Nitya Bhattacharya, Bodon Gogoi, Megha Gogoi, Rameswar Sikia, Muruli Saikia, Durga Saikia,
    Maheswar Gogoi, Nakul Baruah etc.

But before the initiative of the preparatory Committee gained full momentum, there came a setback in the form of the general election to the State Assembly. The Political Schism divided the sponsors of Jorhat College also in two groups. One group, led by Dulal Baruah, the M.L.A. elect., established the Jorhat College as a Night College, as planned earlier.Another group, led by Dr. Neelkamal Bezbaruah, established the New Jorhat College as a day College. The founder Principal and secretary of Jorhat College was Bidyakanta Baruah and the first president of its Governing Body was Jehiruddin Ahmed. The founder principal and secretary of New Jorhat College was Madhab Ch. Chakravarty and the first president of its Governing Body was Dr. Jivakanta Saikia.

In 1967 Jorhat College managed to get a govt. land, the land on which the present premise of the College stands, and started the construction of its own building with public donation. But in the face of the depression suffered by the economy of the state as an aftermath of the chinese aggression, the survival of both the Colleges was jeopardised day by day. However, goodwill and wisdom prevailed when the two Colleges finally got amalgamated in 1970.The first principal of the amalgamated College was Bidyakanta Baruah. In 1972 the College came under the deficit grants in aid system of the govt. of Assam and
soon after it obtained the permanent affiliation of Dibrugarh University.

Jorhat College(Amalgamated),even after obtaining govt. recognition and grant as a day College, continued its night shift from 5.20 p.m. To 9.40 p.m. In fact till the early 80's of the last century the night shift was the main attraction of the College for all, as it was thronged by comparatively brighter and more matured students serving in banks, airforce, schools, hospsitals etc. This college was pioneer in admitting girl students in the night shift and thus helped scores of working women, besides many elderly housewives complete their collegiate education. Unfortunately, however, with the gradual deterioration of the law and order situation ever since the Assam movement, the College had to transform its night shift into an afternoon shift, thereby closing one of its glorious chapters most reluctantly. Any way, the College has by now covered a considerably long way ever since its inception and is heading forward to celebrate its Golden Jubilee by 2012.It has been accelerating its journey forward towards sustainable developments in quality ever since the visit of the Peer Team of NAAC and expects to go ahead unabated through all futurity.
