##NEWS##, About Indian Institute of Technology, Guwahati, Indian Institute of Technology, Guwahati, the sixth and the youngest member of the IIT fraternity, was established on 1st September 1994. The academic programme of IIT Guwahati commenced in August 1995. At present, the Institute has nine departments offering B. Tech., B. Des., M. Tech., PhD and M.Sc. programmes. Many more departments are in the pipeline and will be introduced in the near future. Within a short period of time, IIT Guwahati has been able to build up the necessary infrastructure for carrying out advanced research and has been equipped with state-of-art scientific and engineering instruments. IIT Guwahati's campus consists of a sprawling 285 hectares of land on the north bank of the river Brahmaputra around 20 km. from the heart of the city. At present, the Institute is functioning from the Academic Complex in the campus which is catering to all the requirements of classrooms, workshops, laboratories and administrative offices. All the students of the Institute have been housed in hostels in the campus. Most of the faculty and some staff have also been accommodated in quarters of the Institute. Construction of the various departmental and administrative buildings of the Institute is going on and within a few years from now, IIT Guwahati is expected to function as a full-fledged IIT., Indian Institute of Technology Guwahati's campus is on a sprawling 285 hectares plot of land on the north bank of the river Brahmaputra around 20 km. from the heart of the city.
