Assam Medical College, Dibrugarh was established in the year 1947, Assam Medical College, Dibrugarh is affiliated to Srimanta Sankaradeva University of Health Sciences (SSUHS), Guwahati, Assam
Assam Medical College was formally established on November 3, 1947 at Dibrugarh. It was, however, earlier known as Dr. John Berry White Medical School, which was established in 1902. It has the distinction of being the first medical college in the entire North-eastern region of India. Following the establishment of 2 other medical colleges in Assam, one at Guwahati and another at Silchar, it now serves as the tertiary medical referral centre for the entire upper Assam as well as the some areas of neighbouring states, especially Arunachal Pradesh.
The college is situated at one corner of Dibrugarh and set in the midst of flowing green fields of several Tea Estates. Some buildings are modifications of the original British architecture, although several new constructions have come up recently under the joint collaboration of both the North Eastern Council and State Government to upgrade the college to a premier medical institution of Asia once again. The main charm that draws almost 150 undergraduate and 50 postgraduate students to this college every year is the campus life it has to offer. 14 hostels for the students ensure that everyone, excluding a minority of day-boarders, stay together within the lavish campus area; consequently everybody knows everybody, if only by face. The campus also contains staff quarters, meaning professors and students are always in close contact. The college boasts for some of the best teachers of the respective fields. The college is also proud to have some great principals from time to time of which one has also won the Padmashree award.Right now the college is in full gear for its preparations for the upcoming Diamond jublee celebrations to be celebrated in November 2007.
Dr.John Berry White, MRCS, a British surgeon came to Assam in 1858 to work under the erstwhile East India Company during the British rule of India and served in upper Assam for long 24 years in different capacities and left his foot prints in all spheres of developmental activities of this region. His has also contributed towards the Tea, coal and oil industries and establishment of rail and Road communications in Assam. The most remarkable contribution of Dr.John Berry White, which we all must adore with reverence is his contribution towards the establishment of the "Berry White Medical School" at Dibrugarh, which was established through a legacy personal contribution of Rs. 50,000/- at that time (at present value of over 5 million of rupees) left behind by him after his retirement as civil surgeon of Lakhimpur District in 1882. The establishment of the Berry White Medical School in 1900 A.D., not only heralded the beginning of Allopathic Medical Education in Assam, but also formed the nidus for the subsequent establishment of the Assam Medical College in 1947, through a process of upgradation. Unfortunately, recent document shows that Dr.White died in London on 19th November 1896, four years before the establishment of his dream school at Dibrugarh. Dr.John Berry White was born on 5th June , 1834 in England. He became a member of the Royal College of Surgeons in England in the mid 1850's and applied for the post of assistant surgeon to work under the East India Company in India. He was selected for the post in August, 1857 and was sent to Assam in the next year (1858). After serving for long 24 years as a surgeon, administrator and industrial entrepreneur, he became deeply involved with the developmental activities of this region, more particularly in the field of health care infrastructural development. It was his great magnanimity and generosity that he left behind his major portion of his fortune towards the establishment of a Medical School in this remotest part of the country, after the retirement in 1882, Dr.White went back to London where he died in 19th November,1896. The Dr. John Berry White Medical School had the fortune of acquiring two X-Ray Machine One 10MA and another 15MA to the Medical School 15 years after the monumental discovery of X-Ray by Prof.Ronetgen. These two were perhaps the first X-Ray Machine in the whole country. In the year 1933, the Indian Medical Council was formed and it took over the functions from the General Medical council of Great Britain. The Indian Medical council was unwilling to recognise the licentiate doctors. The All India Medical Licentiate Doctors Association was formed, which demanded up gradation of the medical Schools to Medical colleges. In 1938 its annual session was held at Guwahati, Lokapriya Gopinath Bordoloi, the then Premier of the Congress Government of Assam, in his inaugural address to the conference conceded on principle to the up gradation of Berry White medical School to a full-fledged Medical College, as demanded by the Assam branch of licentiate medical practitioners. The Government soon formed an adhoc committee for the purpose with Loka Bandhu Dr. Bhubaneswar Barua, Dr.Ghanashyam Das, and Dr. K.L.Ghosh, Superintendent of Berry white Medical School, I.G.C.H. Assam and the Executive engineer of Lakhimpur. In 1946 the Bhore Committee recommended the abolition of the Medical Schools with their up gradation to Medical Colleges. Thus ended the Glorious chapter of the Berry White Medical School, paving the way to the establishment of the first medical college in Assam Medical College Dibrugarh on 3rd November 1947.
In addition to the medical courses, also available are paramedical courses, viz. Nursing and Midwifery and Diploma in Pharmacy.
A college steeped in tradition and history, a college which opens its arms to all those who enter its hallowed portals, a college which reaches out to steady the faltering steps of the young medicos who enter it and puts them forward onto the crossroads of life as confident young men and women skilled in their own profession, a college where tradition meets technology and the two try to walk forward together hand in hand, a college whose alumni turn misty eyed nostalgic at the very mention of its name, and above all, a college with a heart and soul – such is the magic of Assam Medical College (AMC in short).
The feet of a galaxy of extremely eminent teachers of all disciplines, physicians and surgeons have polished the corridors of this college. They were successful in establishing this college as a bastion of knowledge ad service in this part of the country. This was in fact the first Medical College in the entire North East of India and one of the finest in Asia.
The college was lucky to have its affairs managed by a number of Principals who were men of vision and courage. It had its ups and downs in the 62 years of its existence, but due to the courage and zeal on the part of the men and women who believe in nothing but the best, it is steadily striding forwards.
I consider it a great privilege and honour to be at the helm of affairs of this great institution – my very own Alma Mater. It has given me a lot, in terms of knowledge experience and life itself. I am sure these sentiments will be echoed by the eminent men and women in different corners of the globe, all past students of this institution.
But we cannot remain buried in the past. The outward face of Assam Medical College, Dibrugarh is changing – a change for the better- it is hoped. Old buildings crumble to give way to new ones but the ideals that had taken the college to its pinnacle of glory remain the same. Renovation, rebuilding and infrastructure development is a must in this ever-changing and ever- advancing field of medical science. The details of infrastructure added to the already existing departments have been posted for all to view. At present the college has a capacity for 170 undergraduate admissions and 105 post-graduate admissions annually and a group of 380 dedicated teachers to handle the same. The student- teacher relationship in this college is unique and best expressed by the students themselves. The college has a green sprawling campus surrounded by tea gardens and is 2 km from the mighty Brahmaputra.
It is my earnest request and hope that all the students who enter this college continue with its glorious traditions and emerge as fine men and women in all walks of life as well as accomplished doctors. Let the past and the present walk with confidence towards a bright future, so that Assam Medical College, always remains as a shining beacon of light in the global map of medical education and research.
