IIT JAM 2024 Pattern of Test Papers

IIT JAM 2024 exam pattern states that each test paper is of three hours duration. In the exam, candidates need to attempt 60 questions which were of 100 marks weightage. These 60 questions are divided into three sections – A, B, and C. All these sections are compulsory and candidates need to attempt questions from all the sections. The medium of instruction for JAM test papers is English.

IIT JAM 2024 Section Breakdown:

Section A:

  • Comprises 30 Multiple Choice Questions (MCQs).
  • 10 questions are valued at one mark each, while 20 questions are worth two marks each.
  • Each MCQ provides four choices, with only one being correct.
  • Candidates can select their answers by clicking the choice.

Section B:

  • Includes 10 Multiple Select Questions (MSQs).
  • Each MSQ carries two marks.
  • Unlike MCQs, MSQs can have one or more correct choices out of four.
  • Full credit is given if all correct choices are selected, and no wrong answers are marked.

Section C:

  • Consists of 20 Numerical Answer Type (NAT) questions.
  • 10 questions are valued at one mark, while the other 10 hold two marks each.
  • Candidates must enter a signed real number using the virtual numeric keypad.
  • No answer choices are provided for NAT questions.

Marking Scheme:

  • Unattempted questions in all sections result in zero marks.
  • In Section A (MCQs), a wrong answer incurs negative marking.
  • For each wrong answer in 1-mark MCQs, 1/3 mark is deducted.
  • For each incorrect response in 2-mark MCQs, 2/3 mark is subtracted.
  • Section B (MSQs) has no negative marking or partial marking.
  • Section C (NAT) also features no negative marking.

IIT JAM Negative Markings

Candidates are informed that there will be a negative marking in IIT JAM 2024. Marks in each section of the exam would be deducted as per the scheme mentioned below. 

  • Section A: For each wrong answer to one mark question, 1/3 mark will be deducted. On the other hand, for each wrong answer to two marks questions, 2/3 mark will be deducted. There is no negative marking for any questions left unanswered.
  • Section B: There is no negative marking in this section. Also, there is no partial marking provision in this section.
  • Section C: There is no negative marking in this section, as well.

Note: Candidates needed to select the answer for MCQ and MSQ-type questions. To enter the answer to NAT questions candidates can only use a mouse on a virtual numeric keypad. At the end of three hours, the computer will automatically close the examination, informs the official website.

Important Instructions:

  • An online virtual calculator is provided, so bringing a calculator is unnecessary.
  • Electronic devices, including mobile phones, are strictly prohibited within the examination hall.
  • Charts, graph sheets, and tables are also not allowed in the exam area.
  • A scribble pad is provided for rough work, with the candidate’s name and registration number required before use.
  • Candidates are limited to possessing only one scribble pad at a time.
  • The examination will end automatically at the designated time, so submit answers promptly.
