Indian Institute of Vegetable Research (IIVR) is a constituent institution under the aegis of Indian Council of Agricultural Research (ICAR). The project has been envisaged as a national network of multidisciplinary research on the improvement of the major vegetable crops. To give a fillip to the Research and to meet the future challenges of the country, at present the IIVR has 7 main centres, 18 sub centres and 31 voluntary centres to undertake the co-ordinated research project. Besides at Varanasi, the headquarter, it has the activities of basic, strategic and applied research on vegetable improvement, biotechnology, production, protection and seed production programme.
Indian Institute of Vegetable Research (IIVR), Varanasi, functions under the control of Indian Council of Agricultural Research (ICAR). It undertakes basic, strategic and applied research to enhance the production of vegetable crops.
IIVR conducts experiments in crop improvement, bio-technology, crop production, crop protection, seed production, and resource management. It organizes training for farmers and provides improved production technologies. The institute has developed new open pollinated varieties of spinach, amaranth, garlic, carrot (Asiatic and European types), radish (Asiatic and European types), cabbage, cauliflower, bluster beans, French bean, pea, snake gourd, bitter gourd, Winter squash, cucumber, watermelon, and capsicum (bell pepper.)The Directorate is located at Arazilines, Adalpura-Mohan Sarai Road, approximately 20 km away from Varanasi towards South-West where all research and development activities are being undertaken. The Directorate falls under the suitable niche of vegetable dominated area of Uttar Pradesh and its location stands at 82.520 longitude and 25.100 N latitude. The average annual rainfall is 1000 mm and distributed over a period of 100 days with peak rainfall during July - August. On a 60 hectares of land the Directorate has mini research complex to support vegetable research activities related to Crop Improvement, Biotechnology, Crop Production and Physiology, Crop Protection, Statistics and Social Science.
