The Christian Medical College Ludhiana Society has been in the arena of medical and allied sciences education for more than a century. The Christian Medical College Ludhiana Society is registered under the Societies Act XXI of 1860. and has established administers and maintains, the Christian Medical College Ludhiana along with its modern teaching hospital, the Christian Dental College and the College Nursing. The Society is formed by the Christian Churches in India and the institution is registered as a minority unaided, charitable educational institution. The Christian Medical College Ludhiana Society seeks to contribute to the real health needs of India by training Christian young men and women as competent, committed and compassionate health workers along with young men and women of others faiths and communities who identify with the goals and spirit of services of the institution It seeks to train health professionally competent socially relevant and spiritually alive with a commitment to serve the unreached and marginalized, in the Sprit of Christ.
THE HISTORY OF C.M.C.
In 1900, the Christian Medical College was started by Ida S. Scudder, an American missionary, as a one-bed clinic to serve women. In 1902, she built the 40-bed Mary Taber Schell Memorial Hospital for women and children, named after the donor’s wife. The site is now CMC Schell Campus, which houses the Eye Hospital and Low Cost Effective Care Unit (LCECU). The main hospital moved to the present location in the Thottapalayam area of Vellore in 1924 and treatment was extended to men as well. At present CMC has 2300 beds on four sites, with all specialities. Patients from all over India and the world come for treatment.
The Christian Medical College Association is a non government, private, inter-denominational Christian organisation. The object of the Association is the establishment, maintenance and development of a Christian Medical College in India where women and men shall receive an education of the highest grade in the art and science of Medicine and Nursing or in one of the Allied Health professions, to equip them in the spirit of Christ, for service in the relief of suffering and the promotion of health.
The CMC community today is made up of an interesting and diverse group of people,- students and faculty come from all over India. Visitors come from Australia, Britain, Canada, Denmark, Ethiopia, France, Germany, Kenya, the Middle East, New Zealand, USA and many other countries. The interchange between varied people and cultures provides a rewarding and stimulating experience.
Christian Medical College Ludhiana has always been a pioneer in health care. The department of Physiotherapy was established in 1960. This was the first fully fledged Physiotherapy department in the region. Duration of the course: The Bachelor of Physiotherapy is a 4 ½ years course. This includes 6 months compulsory rotatory internship. The course is affiliated to the Baba Farid University of Health Sciences, Faridkot. There shall be four examinations, viz, First, Second, Third and Final which will be held at the end of each academic year. The dates for these examinations shall be fixed by the Vice-Chancellor of the university.
First year subjects: Anatomy, Physiology, Biochemistry, Sociology, Exercise Therapy-1 and Electro Therapy-1
Second Year Subjects: Pathology & Microbiology, Pharmacology, Psychology, Exercise Therapy-2 and Electro Therapy-2, Biomechanics.
Third Year Subjects: Orthopaedics, Medicine, Physiotherapy in Orthopaedic Conditions, Physiotherapy in Medical Conditions-1, Research Methodology and Biostatistics.
Fourth Year Subjects: Surgery, Neurology, Paediatrics & Geriatrics, Physiotherapy in Surgical Condition, Physiotherapy in Medical Conditions-2, Rehabilitation, Computer Practical.
Basic Medical Sciences: The Institution has well established departments to teach basic sciences.
Library: CMC has a well equipped library with computers and internet facilities.
Clinical Training: Clinical Instructions and Practical Training is given throughout the course.
The department is well equipped with all modern facilities and has all essential equipment for training the students. The department has well experienced senior staff for providing proper guidance and supervision of clinical demonstrations to the students. Physiotherapy services are also provided to inpatients from all fields of specialization, including Medical and Surgical, ICU, ICCU, CTU, General Medicine, General Surgery, Paediatrics, Neurology, Cardiology, Chest Diseases, Orthopaedic Surgery, Neurosurgery, Burns, Plastics and Micro vascular surgery and Obstetrics and Gynaecology. The facilities available for clinical training are the best in the whole of the region. In fact the Physiotherapy Department of CMC is the first choice for internship by physiotherapy students of established physiotherapy colleges in and around Punjab. The clinical internship programme has been running since 1996.
