This is the first Technical Institute in Punjab established with the full funding of State Government,established in the year 1989 when the then Hon'ble Governor of Punjab laid the foundation stone on October 23,1989. Initially set up as Government Engineering College, it was converted into an autonomous institute in the year 1991 and a "Board of Governors" was constituted to manage the College.In the year 1996, once again the name of the college was changed to the present name in honour of Late Giani Zail Singh, former President of India and a great son of Punjab, without disturbing the original character of the institution. shopping complex which includes a bank (Central Bank of India), a post office,stationary shop, grocery shop, PCO/STD booth, photostat facility, washerman and refreshment corner is centrally located to cater to the needs of the students, faculty and staff. Apart from this two more refreshment booths, one of Verka milk and products & the other from Nascafe are located on the campus.
