The year 1972 saw a seachange in karaikal in the field of women's education with starting of Avvaiyar Government College for Women by the Govenment of Puducherry under Affiliation of Madras University.This college was started in 1972-73 with Arts & Science Courses at Pre-University level. Later to quench the thirst of girls students for knowledge, B.A. History was started during 1973-74 and B.A English Literature during 1976-77. In due course the college is granted 2f - 12b recognition by the UGC and presently the college is running B.Sc,Chemistry, Physics, Computer Science, Maths, Plant Science, B.A. English, History, B.Com (General) and (Corporate).
