Established by an Act of Parliament (the Central Agricultural University Act 1992 (No.40 of 1992), the Central Agricultural University at Imphal was set up on 26th January, 1993, by a vide notification issued by the Department of Agricultural Research and Education (DARE), Government of India. The North Eastern Region of India is a gift of nature with rich cultural and bio diversity and having diversified agro climatic conditions. Agriculture and Allied activities are main livelihood of the region. The region holds tremendous potential for the development of agriculture and related sectors particularly horticulture, post harvest and value addition. However, due to hilly terrain, erratic climatic conditions and shortage of trained manpower, the full potential of resources is under utilized. Severe soil erosion, water scarcity in the dry season, fragmented land holding and sloppy terrain are the major bottle neck for mechanized farming. For catering the needs of the region, the Government of India established a Central Agricultural University with its headquarter at Imphal, Manipur on 26th January, 1993 under the Central Agricultural University Act, 1992. The university has jurisdiction over six north eastern states excluding Assam and Nagaland.
The College of Agricultural Engineering & Post Harvest Technology (CAEPHT) was established by CAU, Imphal at Gangtok , Sikkim during the year 2006 to address the issue of shortage of trained man power in agricultural engineering and various issues pertaining to natural resource management, farm mechanization and post harvest technology.
