DOMBIVLI in the year 2007, a city which is true representation of Indian middle class aspiration with its educated middle class population requires no introduction. When you speak to Mumbaikars , they would still call Dombivli as a “developing” township . Dombivli of the yearly 1940s, what it was is hard to imagine, even during those days a few migrant Tamil speaking individuals had a vision of having their own school to cater to the Tamil linguistic population comprising of few families. With that as vision “The South Indian Association, Dombivli” was born.
The South Indian Association (Regd.) was born on 1/10/1948 on the auspicious day of Vijayadasami. The basic objective of the association was to impart education to the Tamil speaking populace of Dombivli and form an umbrella association to bring the South Indian population together to maintain their cultural identity. The Tamil medium school when started had six students mostly the children of the founders of the institution. This year the institution has entered the “Diamond Jubilee” year.
To keep pace with the changing need of the time, this Primary School progressively grew up to IV Standard (with Tamil Medium) and thereafter with English Medium from V to VIII Standards and retained such an identity.
Growth of Mumbai also resulted in growth of extended suburbs like Dombivli and Kalyan. The population explosion in Dombilvi also necessitated in the need for educational infrastructure. In order to cater to the Educational needs of all sections of the Society at large. During the year 1964, the SIA SECONDARY SCHOOL was started with English as the medium of instruction; The Institution which was started to cater to predominantly cater to the Tamil populace was converted to English medium school to cater to the society at large. The High school teaches several languages like English, Hindi, Marathi, Tamil and Sanskrit. The students can learn these languages as per the guidelines laid down by the education department in the state of Maharashtra. The medium of instruction from I to IV Std. in the Primary School was also changed from Tamil to English from the year 1973 with a view to ensure continuity and sequence in the medium of instruction and to encompass all sections of Dombivlikars.
In the year 1975 the S.I.A. Secondary School grew to the next logical level as a Junior college with all the three faculties of SCIENCE, COMMERCE & ARTS.The K.G. Section was initiated during 1973 as a Feeder to the Primary and Secondary Schools true to the saying ‘CATCH THEM YOUNG’. Thus a child who enters the S.I.A. Junior K.G. at the age of 3 gets uninterrupted Education and leaves the School as a youth of 17 for further studies and avocations. The S.I.A. School is the premier English Medium School in the Town of Dombivli.
The SIA School when started in 1948 was accommodated in rented premises in several buildings in Dombivli. The Management, faced with the chronic problem of accommodation for the School classes conducted in rented rooms, applied to the Government of Maharashtra for assistance. The Government of Maharashtra obliged the institution by granting a revenue free land admeasuring 2435 Sq.yard near the railway station in Dombivli (West). After reserving 660 – sq. yard for a small playground, the construction of the First Wing of the School Building was started during 1963 and The SIA had its own school building in the year 1964, the entire building completed in 1981 in a phased manner. All the other required improvements and facilities were added by 1988. The construction of the Second Wing was taken up during 1989 and completed by April 1992, keeping the entire ground floor admeasuring about 660 - sq. yard as an Open Hall for use by the School in their various activities.
The SIA School has state of the art
1. Local area network comprising 35 PCs with Internet being available on tap for the benefit of students and keep them abreast with the need of the millennium.
2. Chemistry lab which could be envy of full fledged colleges.
3. Audio visual equipments for audio visual based education.
4. Uninterrupted power supply by using a diesel generator.
Since our Secondary and Higher Secondary Higher Secondary Schools are aided by the Government, Students from V to XII Std., are allowed the benefits of Fee Free ships, Scholarships etc. as per the Rules of the Department. The S.I.A Primary School is recognized by the Government of Maharashtra but unaided and is run by charging appropriate fees from the Parents.
At present, nearly 3,000 Students (48 % Girls and 52% Boys speaking different mother tongues are imparted training through English Medium from Junior K.G. to Junior College in 45 Divisions comprising, four divisions in Junior K.G, Senior K.G and I Standard (Primary) and three divisions each in Primary (II to IV Std.), Secondary (V to X Std.), and Higher Secondary (XI & XII Std.) by about 70 suitably trained staff members headed by two Heads of Institutions.
Further, in order to keep pace with the advancement in the Educational field, an Institute of Advanced Studies with three computer faculty members has been constituted for imparting Computer Education to the students of V to X.
The scope of the institute is to be enlarged in a phased manner and commensurate with the expansion in the educational spheres. The institution has thrown up several students who have become doctors, engineers , architects , software engineers , Chartered accountants and scientists. It is pertinent to note that some of the ex students of school have taken up the mantle of managing the affairs of the association.
With growing population and there is a need for the students go out of the town of Dombivli for higher education. The students need to travel long distances in crowded trains for higher education, putting the parents in lot of anxiety and stress and it also deprives the students of valuable time. To overcome the above problem the Association intends to start a senior college in Dombivli, with this in view the Association has already acquired land admeasuring 8000 Sq meters with additional 4000 Sq meters of land for sports activities.
While the Association’s inscribed motto is “KNOWLEDGE IS POWER” the subscribed motto is “UNITY IS STRENGTH”.Imparting Education is a very noble cause. For achievements of this noble objective, let us be prepared to pay the costs whatever they are in suffering and hardships, as long as may be necessary. The Association recognizes that the developments achieved so far are due to the co-operation and assistance by all concerned in general and the DOMBIVLI CITIZENS in particular.
