Degree College, Sopore was founded initially as in intermediate college in 1951 and was upgraded as a degree college in 1963. It is the biggest co-educational institution in the valley of Kashmir. The college is situated 55 Kms. away north of Srinagar in semi-urban town of Sopore commonly called an ‘Apple Town’.

This institution of higher learning was established in 1961 with an enrolment of 40 students. It has reached its present glory due to the administrative acumen, academic excellence and dedication of Principals and teachers.

Foundation stone laid in the year 1970 by KH.G.M.sadiq(then cheif minister of J&K)government degree college bemina started academic operations in the year 1972.

Established in the year 1986, It was initially housed in Govt. Girls Higher Secondary School Baramulla located adjacent to the present campus area. The college is spread over an area of 37 kanals of land. It started its academic venture with a meager number of students in Arts & Commerce and was later on shifted to its own campus in the year 1995. Subsequently, Science stream and Computer Sciences were introduced in 2002 & 2005 respectively.

eing a part of the Government policy towards Human Resource Development and Women Empowerment, it was in March 1979 that the Government Degree College for Women came into existence as a full fledged Arts College for Women.In the year 2004, the College has been Accredited with B + + Grade by the National Accreditation and Assessment Council (NAAC), Banglore, an autonomous body set by the University.

Govt.Degree College, Samba affiliated to University of Jammu was established in the year 2005, by the Govt. of Jammu and Kashmir.In the beginning only the subject in Arts stream were offered. It was in 2010 that in respond to students demand,Science and Commerce stream were also started in addition to Arts stream. At present there are 19 subjects taught in college.
