Indira Kala Sangit Vishwavidyalaya (IKSVV) is one of the oldest universities in India. It is situated in Khairagarh of Rajnandgaon District. It was established in 1956 for providing education in arts and music. Indira Kala Sangit Vishwavidyalaya is a member of the Association of Indian Universities (AIU). It has a number of affiliated colleges, some of them even outside the state. All of its courses have been approved by University Grants Commission, UGC. The university offers courses starting from certificate level to graduate, postgraduate and research. M Phil is offered in Vocal Music, Instrumental, Tabla & Dance, while Doctor of Music is granted Vocal Music. PhD and DLit are offered in all Branches of Music, Dance, Visual Arts, Folk Music & Art and Arts. Students of different courses of Music and Dance are given chance to exhibit their skill on the stage. It gives confidence to the performance from the very beginning of their training. Students are trained in the latest and the best techniques in all the modes of Indian Classical Music, Dance, and Visual Arts.

The university offers a number of facilities. It has a Library, Museum, Audio-Visual Section, UGC Infonet Program, Guest House and Health Centre. Separate hostels are available for boys and girls. Computer Centre has been established to cater to the needs of students, faculty members and employees.

History

Established in 1956, Indira Kala Sangit Vishwavidyalaya (IKSVV) is one of the oldest institutions in the state of Chhattisgarh. The university has produced a number of celebrities in Indian Classical Music and Dance. It keeps the oldest and priceless classical recitals in the listening room of the university with utmost care. RAJA BIRENDRA BAHADUR SINGH and RANI PADMAVATI DEVI- the then rulers of Khairagarh princely estate were the inspiration behind the inception of this unique university which is named after their beloved daughter, Princess INDIRA(see left).The main building of the University is housed in the donated palace. Late Priya Darshani Indira Gandhi, who later became the Prime Minister of India inaugurated the University on October 14, 1956. This is the oldest University of Chhattisgarh and celebrated Golden Jubilee on 14th October 2006. University is situated in the Central Part of India in Chhattisgarh at Khairagarh. Khairagarh is surrounded by three rivers and provides a tranquil and serene atmosphere to the student-artists. The campus of this University presents a rare example of fraternity and brotherhood. Teachers and students of different Faculties are from different parts of Country and various cultural backgrounds. Their presence at the campus makes Khairagarh town a real heterogeneous place.
