The University of Sheffield (informally Sheffield University) is a research university based in the city of Sheffield in South Yorkshire, England. It received its royal charter in 1905 as a successor to Sheffield Medical School (1828) and University College of Sheffield (1897). As one of the original ‘red brick’ universities, it is also a member of the prestigious Russell Group of research intensive universities. In 2012, QS World University Rankings placed Sheffield as the 66th university worldwide. The year before, Sheffield was also named ‘University of the Year’ 2011 in the Times Higher Education awards.
