The SOF IEO Syllabus for 2024 has been published to assist you in your exam preparation. The syllabus for SOF IEO 2024 encompasses all the crucial topics from which questions will be asked. The Science Olympiad Foundation (SOF) is responsible for conducting the SOF IEO exam and formulating the 2024 question paper based on this syllabus.

Section – 2 : Search for and retrieve information from various text types like Stories, Anecdotes, etc., Understand information through pictures, Time-table format, etc., Acquire broad understanding of and look for specific information in short texts like messages, Invitations, etc.

Class 6

Section – 1 : Nouns, Pronouns, Verbs, Adverbs, Adjectives, Articles, Conjunctions, Prepositions, Punctuation and Jumbled Words, Tenses, Voices, Narration, etc., Spellings, Collocations, Phrasal verbs, Idioms, Synonyms, Antonyms.

Section – 2 : Search for and retrieve information from various text types like News headlines, Brochures, Formal and Informal letters, Itinerary, etc., Acquire broad understanding of and look for specific information in Short narratives, Time-tables, News stories, Diary entry, Poster Making, Messages, etc.

Section – 3 : Ability to understand situation-based variations in functions like agreement and disagreement, Requests, Refusals, Apologies, etc.

Class 7

Understand information given in News reports, Brochures, Itinerary, etc., Acquire broad understanding of and look for specific information in short narratives, Biographies, Notices and Messages, etc.

Class 10

Section – 1 : Synonyms, Antonyms, Analogies and Spellings, One Word, Word order, Nouns, Verbs, Adverbs, Adjectives, Articles, Prepositions, Conjunctions, Punctuations, Voices, Narration, Concord, Question forms, Tenses, Conditionals, Modals, Collocations, Phrasal verbs, Idioms, Homonyms and homophones, Words related to weather, Countries, Language and people, Global problems, etc.

Section – 2 : Search for and retrieve information from various text types like Encyclopedias, Dictionaries, etc., Understand information presented in instruction manual format, Message format and others, Acquire broad understanding of and look for specific information in longer texts like editorials, Essays, etc., Make inferences from advanced texts.

Section – 3 : Ability to understand situation-based variations in functions like Giving/accepting compliments, Agreeing, Disagreeing, Requesting, Seeking information, Pronunciation, etc.

Section – 4 : Higher Order Thinking Questions – Syllabus as per Sections 1, 2 and 3.

Class 11

  • Total number of questions – 50
  • Time – 1 hour

Basic Things to Learn During Preparation for the IEO Exam

  • Synonyms are words or phrases that have a nearly identical meaning to the original word or phrase.
  • Antonyms are phrases or words that have an opposing meaning to the original word or phrase.
  • noun is a term that refers to a person, location, or thing. Nouns are further divided into kinds, such as common nouns, proper nouns, abstract nouns, and so on.
  • Prepositions are words that explain the relationship that exists between two items, locations, or persons.
  • Conjunctions are words that join together. And, but, and or are examples of these terms.
  • Adjectives are words that describe or provide information about the noun they describe. They may appear in various areas of the phrase. Adjectives usually finish in ‘ing’ or ‘ed.’
  • Objects or things are referred to as articles.
  • Homophones are words that have the same pronunciation but distinct meanings. Homophones can also have different spellings.
  • Analogies and spellings: Spellings are the letters that makeup words.
  • Verbs are words that perform an action. They describe the action of the topic.
  • Idioms and Proverbs: Proverbs are often traditional/century-old sayings that offer guidance. Idioms, on the other hand, have a symbolic meaning and, unlike proverbs, are not moralistic in character.

Class 12

  • Total number of questions – 50
  • Time – 1 hour

Levels of IEO Exam

For English Olympiad, students should refer to their relevant CBSE/ICSE/State Board syllabus. The IEO Syllabus Class 11 and 12 is as per your prescribed syllabus.

The SOF International English Olympiad is conducted at two levels:

Level 1

The first level of the test is organised in the respective schools of the participants during school hours.

  • (i) Level 1 is a test of 60 minutes duration comprising 35 objective-type (multiple-choice) questions for class 1 to class 4 and 50 objective-type (multiple-choice) questions for class 5 to class 12.
  • (ii) The question paper consists of four sections:
    • Section 1: Word & Structure Knowledge
    • Section 2: Reading
    • Section 3: Spoken & Written Expression
    • Section 4: Achievers Section
  • (iii) There are separate question papers for each date of the exam.
  • (iv) The medium of the test is English.
  • (v) CBSE, ICSE/ISC and State Board syllabi are followed for setting the test papers.
  • (vi) The exam is conducted during school hours.

Level 2

Level 2 is conducted for students of class 3 to class 12. The qualifiers for the second round would include the following:

  1. At International Level: Top 5% of candidates, class-wise, who appear in the 1st level exam internationally.
  2. At Zone/State Level: Top 25 rank holders from each zone and each class.
  3. At School Level: Class topper, where at least 10 students from a class appear in the exam and score at least 50% qualifying marks.
