Haryana Kala Parishad and Chandigarh University jointly organized Teej Mahotsav
Folk artists from Haryana and students of Chandigarh University celebrated Teej-The festival of monsoons in a traditional way
Cultural performances and depiction of cultural, traditional tableau of the state of Punjab & Haryana marked the celebration of Teej, the festival of monsoons at the campus of Chandigarh University, Gharuan. Haryana Kala Parishad in association with Chandigarh University, Gharuan organized Teej Mahotsav in which the rich culture of the neighbouring states of Punjab & Haryana were showcased. Yogendra Chaudhary, Principal Secretary, Foreign Cooperation, Government of Haryana, Pawan Choudhary, Advisor to Chief Minister of Haryana, Rajneesh Garg, ADC to Chief Minister of Haryana, Sanjay Bhasin, Director Haryana Kala Parishad, Gajendra Phogat, OSD, Special Publicity Cell, Government of Haryana were amongst the dignitaries who were present on the occasion. During the colorful and musical extravaganza the students of Chandigarh University and professional artists of Haryana Kala Parishad presented traditional folk dances of Haryana.
Phag Dance which is traditional dance performed by the agricultural community of Haryana and mark the beginning of sowing season kick-started the Teej Mahotsav which was followed by Giddha performed by the girls of Chandigarh University. The theatrical Saang Dance which is based on folklore of Hindu Mythology and performed in the form of mimicry, memorized the audience. The other traditional dances that were performed during the Teej Mahotsav included Chhathi Dance, Ghoomar Dance and Loor Dance. The musical extravaganza ended with the Bhangra team of Chandigarh University performing on the foot tapping numbers that made the audience dance to the tune of popular Punjabi folk songs.
While inaugurating the Teej Mahotsav, Yogendra Chaudhary, Principal Secretary, Government of Haryana said, “ The two neighbouring states of Punjab and Haryana have a lot of common cultural & traditional rituals that bind them together. Celebration of festivals like Baisakhi, Teej encourages the spirit of brotherhood amongst the residents of two states”. He further added that, both the states of Punjab and Haryana are agriculture-based economies and hence the significance of the arrival of monsoons is very close to everyone’s heart. Monsoon brings a ray of hope not only to the farmers community, but it brings respite to the common man also from the scorching and humid climate therefore the celebration of Teej festival which marks the beginning of monsoons is celebrated with joy and music.
An art exhibition ‘The Tale of Bhagwat Gita’ showcasing the 18 chapters and 700 verses of Shri Bhagwat Gita in the form of paintings were exhibited for the visitors by the artists of Haryana Kala Parishad. The cultural exhibition showing the heritage of Punjab and Rural Haryana became the centre of attraction as the students dressed-up in the traditional attire presented the tableau of rich culture and old traditions that are on the verge of getting extinct in the modern world. Competitions like playing folk instruments, rangoli making, face painting, reciting of traditional old songs were also held.
