NITIE one step closer to become an IIM | Mumbai News

Located in the picturesque Powai area of Mumbai, nestled alongside the serene Vihar Lake, the National Institute of Industrial Engineering (NITIE) is making remarkable strides on its journey towards becoming an Indian Institute of Management (IIM). The institute’s relentless pursuit of excellence is evident through its consistent improvement in the National Institutional Ranking Framework (NIRF) rankings, ascending from the 12th position in 2017 to an impressive 7th place in 2023.

Recently, on Friday, the Lok Sabha took a momentous step by passing the Indian Institute of Management (Amendment) Bill, propelling NITIE closer to achieving its coveted IIM status. Once the bill clears the Rajya Sabha, NITIE will officially secure its position as the 21st IIM in the country and the second one in Maharashtra, following IIM Nagpur, established in 2015 as part of the new generation IIMs.

An NITIE official remarked, “In July, the Union Cabinet gave its approval for amending the IIM Act, upgrading NITIE’s status to IIM Mumbai. With the Lok Sabha’s resolute support, the bill will now proceed to the Rajya Sabha and eventually reach the President of India for the final formalities. Subsequently, we will embark on the academic reorganization to align with the IIM structure and other essential aspects.”

Anticipating the transition to IIM, NITIE has undertaken various infrastructure projects over the past few years, ensuring a seamless transformation. These projects encompass the construction of new hostels and staff quarters, the renovation of old classrooms and lecture halls, fortification of the boundary wall, and enhancing the overall beauty of the campus. These endeavors have been made possible through funding from the Higher Education Funding Agency (HEFA).

NITIE’s transformation into an IIM stands as a testament to its unwavering commitment to enhance its educational offerings and elevate its rankings in the realm of management institutions. The institute has taken progressive steps to promote gender diversity on its campus, exemplified by the recent modification in its admissions criteria. Formerly limited to engineering graduates, NITIE’s Post Graduate Diploma in Management (PGDIM) now welcomes candidates with a Master of Science (MSc) degree in mathematics and statistics.

As NITIE advances towards its imminent IIM status, it is poised to consolidate its position as a premier management institution in India, embodying excellence and nurturing future leaders in the realm of management and business.
