Significant changes are underway in the academic landscape of Indian higher education, as premier institutions like the Indian Institutes of Technology (IITs) and National Institutes of Technology (NITs) have made the decision to discontinue branch change options for students. This pivotal shift in policy is expected to reshape student preferences and admission trends across these esteemed institutions.

Key Highlights:

  • Prominent Indian institutes like IITs and NITs discontinue branch change options for students.
  • IIT Bombay, IIT Hyderabad, and IIT Jammu initiate changes in branch upgrade policies.
  • 17 NITs, including NIT Delhi, Tiruchi, Warangal, and Jaipur, adopt similar measures.
  • Closure of branch change window leads to increasing admission cutoffs for lower branches at IITs.
  • Career Counseling Expert Amit Ahuja explains impact on student preferences and admission trends.
  • Shift in student choices may boost admissions for core branches at other IITs.
  • Diverse job opportunities drive student inclination towards core branches.

Renowned Institutions Embrace Reform

In a noteworthy transformation, IIT Bombay and IIT Hyderabad have opted to eliminate the branch upgrade opportunity for their students. This alteration is echoed by IIT Jammu’s decision to close the branch change window. The impact extends beyond IITs, as 17 NITs have also followed suit by discontinuing the branch upgrade provision. This decision affects institutions such as NIT Delhi, Tiruchi, Warangal, Suratkal, Jaipur, Rourkela, Calicut, Kurukshetra, Jamshedpur, Surat, Pondicherry, and Nagaland.

Shaping New Admission Dynamics

This significant adjustment in policy has already initiated a shift in admission dynamics, with the entrance cutoffs for lower branches of IITs experiencing an upward trend. In comparison to previous years, the All India Rank required for admission has witnessed an increase of approximately 3 to 4 thousand ranks.

Career Counseling Expert Amit Ahuja from ALLEN Career Institute explained that in previous years, numerous students with commendable ranks chose to secure admission in the core branches of prominent IITs. Many were willing to enroll in lower branches, with the intention of upgrading to more sought-after branches based on their academic performance during the initial year of study. However, the recent policy change has led to the discontinuation of this option at top-tier IITs.

Shaping Academic and Career Paths

The availability of the branch upgrade option had a direct influence on the cutoffs for lower branches at leading IITs, which used to be relatively lower due to the potential for later upgrades. With the discontinuation of this option at institutes such as IIT Bombay and Hyderabad, students are now opting for lower branches at other prestigious IITs. As a result, there has been a marked increase in the cutoffs for various branches, including Energy, Chemical, Civil, Metallurgy, Environmental Science, Aerospace, and Chemical Engineering at IIT Bombay.

As other IITs potentially follow suit in discontinuing the branch change option, students are likely to pivot towards institutions like IIT Indore, Gandhinagar, Jodhpur, Patna, Ropar, and Mandi. This shift in preferences could also prompt a surge in admissions for core branches at IITs such as Goa and Bhilai. Amit Ahuja highlighted that core branches such as Computer Science, Electrical Engineering, Artificial Intelligence, Data Science, and Mechanical Engineering tend to offer diverse and lucrative job prospects.

In conclusion, the elimination of branch change options at premier Indian institutions heralds a transformative phase in higher education admissions, influencing students’ academic trajectories and career aspirations.
