76th Independence Day commemorated

On India’s 76th Independence Day, the Vice-Chancellor of the University of Hyderabad (UoH), Prof. B J Rao, hoisted the National Flag at Prof. Gurbaksh Singh Maidan in the University campus, in the presence of Deans, Heads, Faculty, Registrar, Officers, students and staff.

At a time when the nation has been celebrating Azadi ka Amrit Mahotsav and Har Ghar Tiranga, the Vice-Chancellor congratulated the University fraternity and paid fervent tributes to the leaders who brought the independence, and to the institutional leaders, who laid the foundation to the excellence of the University, which has emerged as an Institution of Eminence.

Prof. B J Rao mentioned some of the activities that have been carried out under the mandate of the status of Institution of Eminence (IoE) like enhancement of research infrastructure, increased student strength, improved perception, alumni engagement, among other developmental activities. He also mentioned some of the significant achievements of the university faculty, students and alumni who have received many recognitions nationally and globally.

Talking about research, Prof. Rao has underlined the fact that the University has more than 265 ongoing research projects operated by the faculty members with a total outlay of 350 crore rupees funded by various national and international agencies, besides more than 65 patents in India and abroad having been filed.

Prof. Rao also mentioned that Shri Dharmendra Pradhan ji, Hon’ble Minister of Education and Minister of Skill Development and Entrepreneurship, Govt. of India, had visited the campus on July 4, 2022 and inaugurated the buildings of Centre for Digital Learning and Training Resources (CDLTR); School of Physics and School of Engineering Sciences and Technology. Quoting the Minister, Prof. Rao said that the best practices nurtured and practiced at the University of Hyderabad over its long glorious past became an intimate part of National Education Policy-2020.

Dwelling on the rankings, Prof. Rao noted that the University has matched global standards. In the QS Rankings 2023, the University has stood among the top Universities in the world overall, and among the top 150 fastest growing under the age of 50. The University has been ranked at Tenth among the Universities in India and at Twentieth in the overall category by the National Institutional Ranking Framework 2022.

Prof. Rao has informed the attendees that the University of Hyderabad has successfully uploaded a total of 33186 records of the Degrees awarded to the Digilocker NAD from the 1st – 21st Convocations

Citing an example of excellence in educational outreach activity, Prof. Rao said that the course offered by CDVL on Diploma in Infection Prevention and Control is influencing a large number of health care workers in prevention of infections and control of Antimicrobial resistance.


On being part of the Ministry’s CUET for the admissions, he stated that the University has received more than 1.25 lakhs applications for the Integrated courses seats and about 1.5 lakh applications for PG courses.

Lauding the Internal Quality Assurance Cell (IQAC) to keep pace with recent developments and injunctions from the UGC about Academic Integrity, Prof. Rao said it has done a good job of coordinating with the NAAC peer-team visit during May 2022, the reaccreditation expected is still awaited.

Among the achievements of Faculty/Students/Alumni, Prof. Rao informed that Prof. Dayananda Siddavattam, former Senior Professor at the Department of Animal Biology, school of life sciences has been selected as the Vice Chancellor of Gitam University, Visakhapatnam. He has recently taken charge at GITAM and we wish him the best in his assignment.

Exuding pride, Prof. Rao shared that Aravind Banavath has secured All India Rank 623 in the prestigious Civil Services Examination 2021 conducted by the Union Public Service Commission (UPSC) across the country.

Prof. Rao also commended the contribution of the students of the School of Medical Sciences in Kantivelugu– the vision screening program of Telangana.

Notable among alumni achievements, the VC specifically mentioned that Dr. Srinivasa Reddy, an alumnus of School of Chemistry with more than 20 years of research experience in the synthesis of natural products/medicinal chemistry/drug discovery has been appointed as the Director of the CSIR-Indian Institute of Chemical Technology, Hyderabad.

Emphasizing on the University’s capabilities with regard to the career of the students, Prof. Rao noted that the year 2021-22 witnessed better placements compared to 2020-21, placing 523 students in 195 companies with packages ranging from 3.50 to 23.00 lakhs per annum.

Highlighting the facet of Social Responsibility to conserve Nature, Prof. Rao mentioned Mega Plantation drives have taken place on campus where many saplings were planted in different locations with the help of the Hyderabad Metropolitan Development Authority (HMDA), State Bank of India (SBI) and other groups, thus increasing the green cover.

Welcoming the National Education Policy 2020, Prof. Rao said that it aimed at increasing the Gross Enrolment Ratio in higher education including vocational education from 26.3% (2018) to 50% by 2035. He also exhorted all the stakeholders on the need to be supportive to other Higher education institutions in their development, community engagement and service, contribution to various fields of practice, faculty development for the higher education system, and support to school education. He also expressed a firm resolve to improve the faculty and student diversity through the internationalization that the NEP and the IoE mandated, turning us into a truly global player in Higher Education.

Concluding with warm greetings, Prof. Rao once again greeted all on the 76th Independence Day with tributes to the national leaders.

Prof. R.S. Sarraju, Pro Vice-Chancellor, hoisted the National Flag at the Golden Threshold campus of the University and planted trees on the occasion.
