IIT (ISM) Dhanbad PhD Admission 2024 – The Indian Institute of Technology (Indian School of Mines), Dhanbad, invites applications for admission to the PhD Program in various disciplines for the academic session 2024-25 (Phase I). IIT (ISM) Dhanbad offers Institute Assistantship (IA) to deserving and eligible candidates who qualify through the institute selection procedure. Eligibility Criteria

Essential criteria for Ph.D. in Engineering:

  • Applicant must hold a Master’s degree in Engineering in the relevant subject with first class/division or a minimum of 60% marks/CGPA of 6.0 (on a 10 point scale), OR
  • Applicant must possess a Bachelor’s degree in Engineering with a minimum of 70% marks/CGPA of 7.0 (on a 10 point scale), OR
  • Applicant must have a Master’s degree in Science or an allied area with first-class/division or a minimum of 60% marks/CGPA of 6.0 (on a 10 point scale).

Essential criteria for Ph.D. in Science:

  • Applicant must hold a Master’s degree in the relevant subject with first class/division or a minimum of 60% marks/CGPA of 6.0 (on a 10-point scale), OR
  • Applicant must have a Bachelor’s degree in Engineering with a minimum of 70% marks/CGPA of 7.0 (on a 10 point scale), OR
  • Applicant must possess a Master’s degree in Science or an allied area with first-class/division or a minimum of 60% marks/CGPA of 6.0 (on a 10 point scale).

Essential criteria for Ph.D. in Humanities and Social Sciences:

  • Applicant must hold a Master’s degree in the relevant subject, Arts, Commerce, Humanities, and Social Sciences with first class/division or a minimum of 60% marks/CGPA of 6.0 (on a 10 point scale), OR
  • Applicant must possess a Bachelor’s degree in Engineering with a minimum of 70% marks/CGPA of 7.0 (on a 10 point scale), OR
  • Applicant must have a Master’s degree in Engineering / Technology / Science / Commerce / Management with first class/division or a minimum of 60 % marks/CGPA of 6.0 (on a 10 point scale).

Essential criteria for Ph.D. in Management:

  • Applicant must hold a Master’s degree or equivalent in Management or allied areas or Engineering / Technology with first class/division or a minimum of 60% marks/CGPA of 6.0 (on a 10 point scale), OR
  • Applicant with a Bachelor’s degree in Engineering with a minimum of 70% marks/7.0 CGPA, OR
  • Applicant must possess a Master’s degree in Science / Arts / Commerce with first-class/division or a minimum of 60% marks/CGPA of 6.0 (on a 10 point scale), OR
  • Applicant who has qualified for CA/ICAI/ICMA/CS, with first-class/division or a minimum of 60% marks/CGPA of 6.0 (on a 10 point scale) in Bachelor’s degree.

Note: Bachelor’s degree in Engineering refers to a regular fulltime Bachelor’s degree. Candidates with AMIE or similar degrees are not eligible for admission.

  • Interested candidates may submit their application online only, between Mar 22, 2024 to Apr 20, 2024

Application Fee

  • For General/OBC/EWS candidate : Rs. 1000/-
  • For SC/ST/PC/Female candidate : Rs. 500/- 
  • Mode of Payment : Through online mode

Admission Procedure

All candidates seeking admission to the Ph.D. program (full-time) at the institute must apply online through the admission portal of IIT (ISM) Dhanbad.

  • GATE/NET(Assistant Professorship)/CAT/GMAT candidates: A candidate who has qualified GATE/NET or an Appropriate National Level Examination is eligible for Ph.D. admission ONLY in Engineering, Science, Management Studies, and Humanities & Social Sciences under the Institute Assistantship (IA). A candidate who has qualified CAT/GMAT is eligible for Ph.D. in Management under the Institute Assistantship (IA).
  • CFTI & Top 20 NIRF ranking graduates (CGPA of 8.0 or above): CFTI graduates (Masters and/or Bachelor’s degree holders) with a CGPA/OGPA of 8.0 or above are also eligible for Ph.D. admission at IIT(ISM) Dhanbad.
  • For Masters and/or Bachelor’s degree holders from IITs with a CGPA of 8.0 or above, the requirement of GATE/NET/CAT/GMAT is waived off.
  • Candidates from the TOP 20 Institute/ Universities in Engineering/Overall category in any of the last two years NIRF ranking and having a CGPA of 8.0 or more in Master/Bachelor’s degree will also be considered without the requirement of GATE/NET/CAT/GMAT.

Selection Process

The selection process depends on the number of vacancies available and the performance of the candidate. The department may employ suitable criteria for shortlisting candidates who have applied for the Ph.D. program in their respective disciplines. Interviews will be conducted for all shortlisted candidates for selection to the PhD program.
