Geotechnical engineering is the branch of civil engineering which is concerned with the engineering behavior of earth materials. Geotechnical engineering is useful in civil engineering and also has applications in military, mining, petroleum and other engineering disciplines that are concerned with construction on the surface or inside the ground.

Geotechnical Engineer checks the soil on which the construction is to be done, checks the properties of soil, plans stable structure to be constructed on that particular place which is resistant from environmental natural hazards such as earthquakes, landslides, sinkholes, soil liquefaction, debris flows and rockfalls. They see what materials can be added on the construction site for sustenance of the building. They think not about the present but also have to keep a note of the future conditions before construction on the site.

A geotechnical engineer after studying the soil properties then determines and designs the type of foundations, earthworks, and/or pavement required for the intended man-made structures to be built. Foundations are designed and constructed for various high-rise buildings, bridges, medium to large commercial buildings, and smaller structures where the soil conditions are not not compatible for big construction.
Geotechnical engineer constructs shallow and deep foundations, embankments, tunnels, dikes and levees, channels, reservoirs, wharves, marinas, and jetties, oil platforms.
