The Hornby Scholarship is a yearly scholarship provided by the British Council to teachers of English language for a one year M.A. level study in the United Kingdom. The scholarship focuses on supporting key English language specialists, such as senior teachers, teacher-trainers, inspectors and material writers by enabling them to study the English language and teaching theory and practice for an academic year in the UK. Graduates are then encouraged to use this knowledge to advance the teaching of English in their home countries.
- Have successfully completed an undergraduate degree course equivalent to a Bachelors Degree in the UK (certification must be provided as part of each candidate’s application).
- Have at least 5 years’ hands-on and direct experience as an English language teacher/teacher trainer (as opposed to experience only in a management role, such as co-ordinating policy or running a school).
- Have been involved in some sort of developmental work as trainers or managers.
- Have attained an overall minimum Band score 6.5 on the International English Language Testing Service (IELTS), with no less than 6 in any of the categories.
