Education in the 20th century was a distant dream for the average Indian women. The British had established educational institutions at many places but the activities of missionaries were looked at with suspicion. Morever, not many had the inclination or affluence to send their daughters to school which were seen as symbol of elitism. But by then a lot of people had realized the importance of women's education.
