Shevaroys Viruthambal Charitable Trust In the year 1825, the then Birtish Collector of Salem Mr. Cockburn, developed the small hill station nearby so that he and the other British officials of the East India Company can spend their summers as he found the weather up the mountain to be moderate.

As the years went by, the weather was found to be salubrious and many British started visiting the hills and the Christian Missionaries set up schools to educate the British children.
