Social Institutions<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>(i) Definition<\/strong>&nbsp;and features of Social&nbsp;Institutions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>(ii) Types of Social Institutions:<\/strong>&nbsp;Kinship, Marriage and Family<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-2-religion-and-society\">2. Religion and Society<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>(i) Definition and concepts<\/strong>&nbsp;of religion and&nbsp;science; beliefs, rituals, superstitions, taboo.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Definition of the above and a basic understanding of each of the above. Differences and similarities between religion and science.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>(ii) Theories of religion:&nbsp;<\/strong>animism, naturism,&nbsp;totemism, functional theories.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A brief discussion of animism, naturism, totemism; functional theories (Malinowski,&nbsp;Radcliffe Brown and Durkhiem).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>(iii) Functions and dysfunctions of religion.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A brief discussion on the positive and negative functions of religion.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>(iv) Morality and social control.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Definition of morality and social control; relation between religion, morality and&nbsp;social control, moral code, religious code.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-3-political-organization\">3. Political Organization<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Political Organization and its role in bringing&nbsp;about change in society.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Definition of political organization; definition of Panchayati Raj (Village Panchayat, Block Samiti and Zila parishad &#8211; three tier, the 73rd Constitution Amendment Act, Bal Panchayats); discuss the role of the Panchayat in empowerment of women and children.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-4-economic-organisation\">4. Economic Organisation<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>(i) Economic Organisation<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Definition of economic organization, economic and free goods.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>(ii) Economies of Indian tribes:&nbsp;<\/strong>food gathering, agriculture, shifting axe cultivation,&nbsp;handicrafts, pastoralism, industrial labour.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Economies of Indian tribes: (i) Food&nbsp;gathering; (ii) agriculture: shifting axe cultivation (jhum, dahi, koman, penda,&nbsp;podu and bewar), criticism of this type of cultivation, examples of tribes having this&nbsp;practice; (iii) handicraft making; (iv) pastoralism; (v) industrial labour &#8211;&nbsp;migration of large numbers of Santhal,&nbsp;Kond and Gond to tea gardens in the north&nbsp;east; large resources of coal, iron and steel&nbsp;in Bengal, Bihar and Madhya Pradesh;&nbsp;examples of Santhal, Ho in pick-mining,&nbsp;coal-cutting, the mica and the iron &amp; steel&nbsp;industry.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>(iii) Agrarian Economy, Jajmani system and&nbsp;Rural Employment.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Agrarian Economy: land relations&nbsp;&#8211; owner,&nbsp;tenant, share cropper.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Jajmani system: caste based occupations and exchange of services.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A brief understanding of MGNREGA and its implications.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>(iv) Traditional Markets<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>To be discussed with respect to Weekly markets, barter exchange.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-5-tribal-india-past-present-and-future\">5.
