    2. The nucleus contains positively charged protons and neutral neutrons.<\/li>
    3. A neutral atom has an equal number of protons and electrons.<\/li>
    4. Atoms can gain electrons and there by become negatively charged, or they can lose electrons and become positively charged.<\/li>
