International Junior Science Olympiad (IJSO) – The International Junior Science Olympiad (IJSO) is an annual individual and team competition in the Natural Sciences for students who are under sixteen years old on December 31 of the competition year.

16th International Junior Science Olympiad – IJSO 2019

The 16th International Junior Science Olympiad will take place in Doha, Qatar from December 03-12, 2019. It is organized by the Ministry of Education and Higher Education in collaboration with Qatar University. More than 300 bright students aged 15 years and younger, from more than 50 countries around the world, will meet during the Science Olympiad to test their knowledge and skills in physics, biology and chemistry.

Registration

The registration process for the IJSO 2019 has been started. IJSO 2019 will be held at Doha, Qatar from December 03-12, 2019. The last date for completing the registration process is October 15, 2019. Candidates can register for IJSO 2019 from the official website of IJSO 2019 or with the help of the direct link provided on the ‘Registration’ Page.
All the information provided by the candidates will be shared with the hosting country only for the purpose of visa and registration. Only those countries, which have participated in one or more earlier IJSOs may register using the login ID and password sent to the IB member. Participation in the IJSO either by a host country, a delegation or an observer, signifies acceptance of the statutes governing the IJSO.

Guidelines

The guidelines to participate in the International Junior Science Olympiad are given below.

  • Competitors must be born on or after January 01, 2004, i.e they must not be older than 15 years old.
  • He/She must holds a valid passport of that country or is in the education system of that country for at least one academic year.
  • A normal team consists of six students and three leaders. If a normal team cannot be fulfilled, a minimum team of three students and one leader is allowed to participate in IJSO. Teams consisting of less than three members do not qualify for team awards.
  • Participants are not allowed to use their own collection of formulae from mathematics, chemistry, physics, etc. during the competition.
  • Each participating country that has either participated with a team or sent an observer to the IJSO in one of the previous two years, is invited to send a delegation of six students and three team leaders

Marking Scheme

The marking of the Tests are conducted by the Scientific Committee and may be revised following discussions with the Team Leaders during moderation.

The maximum points allocated to the tasks are:

  • Test One: 30 points
  • Test Two: 30 points
  • Test Three: 40 points

Test One and Test Two are marked individually. In Test One the correct answer will be marked 1 (one), the wrong answer will get penalty 0.25 (zero point twenty five), and zero marks for not answering. Each member of the team for Test Three will be awarded the same points. For correct marking the team leader/s is/are obliged to state clearly the names of his/her students as Team A or Team B. However, the names on each team may be changed (reshuffled) only on the arrival date. No more changes can be made afterwards.

It is organized by the Ministry of Education and Higher Education in collaboration with Qatar University. More than 300 bright students aged 15 years and younger, from more than 50 countries around the world, will meet during the Science Olympiad to test their knowledge and skills in physics, biology and chemistry.

The competition comprises two individual theoretical tests followed by a practical test. These tests should be the result of a team effort of all involved students. The aim of this science competition is to introduce the students, at a young age, to an international network of beta enthusiasts. In addition it promotes and rewards the pursuit of excellence in scientific endeavor and stimulates gifted students to further develop their talents in Natural Sciences.
