PART A — (10 × 2 = 20 Marks)

1. What do you mean by rating of a battery?
2. What is meant by battery plate sulphation?
3. Give the requirements of starter motor.
4. What do you mean by third brush regulation?
5. List out the problems encountered in the contact points of ignition system.
6. Differentiate hot spark plug from cold spark plug.
7. What is adaptive ignition system?
8. Differentiate HEI distributor and conventional breaker-point.
9. How do you reduce head light dazzling?
10. Mention the advantages of earth return system.

PART B — (5 × 16 = 80 Marks)

11. (a) Describe the testing procedure for laboratory and manufacturer’s tests of lead-acid battery with neat sketches.

(b) (i) Explain the constant current charging method of automotive batteries with a sketch. (10)
(ii) Explain the care and maintenance of automotive batteries. (6)

12. (a) Explain the constructional and working details of solenoid operated pinion drive of starter motor with a sketch.
Or
(b) Explain the working principle of alternator with its three stator circuits. State the advantages of it over D.C. generator.

13. (a) Draw the circuit diagram for battery coil ignition system of six cylinder four-stroke petrol engine and explain it.
Or
(b) (i) What is the need of altering the ignition timing with respect to engine speed and load? (4)
(ii) Explain the centrifugal and vacuum advance mechanisms with the help of neat sketches. (12)

14. (a) Explain the distributorless ignition system with suitable sketch.
Or
(b) (i) Describe the working of breakerless ignition system with neat sketch. (8)
(ii) Explain electronic spark timing/control with a circuit diagram.(8)

15. (a) (i) What is meant by dazzling of head lights? (2)
(ii) Explain the various anti-dazzling devices with neat sketches. (14)

(b) Write notes on the following :
(i) Electronic fuel pump, (5)
(ii) Electrical horn, (5)
