Nirma University started the Doctoral Programme in the year 2003. The University is renowned for the quality and diversity of its research. Ample opportunities are provided to faculty members and students to research, actively participate in international and national conferences/ events, to publish research work in highly acclaimed research studies. The Institute of Architecture and Planning, Nirma University initiated it’s a PhD Programme in Architecture and Planning in July . The Admission to this PhD programme is based on entrance exams and interviews. General intake of students is around 10-15. The course is offered as both part-time and full time in Areas such as Urban Ecology, Disaster Management and Developmental Planning, Urban Open spaces, Urban Forest etc.

Eligibility Criteria:

Interested candidates should fulfill following eligibility criteria:

  • Candidates for the admission to the PhD programme shall have a Master’s degree or a professional degree declared equivalent to the Master’s degree by the corresponding statutory regulatory body, with at least 55% marks in aggregate or its equivalent grade ‘B’ in the UGC 7-point scale (or an equivalent grade in a point scale wherever grading system is followed) or an equivalent degree from a Foreign Educational Institution accredited by the Assessment and Accreditation Agency which is approved, recognised or authorised by an authority, established or incorporated under a law in its home country or any other statutory authority in that country for the purpose of assessing, accrediting or assuring quality and standards of educational institutions.
  • Candidates possessing a Degree considered equivalent to MPhil Degree of an Indian Institution, from a Foreign Educational Institution accredited by an Assessment and Accreditation Agency which is approved, recognised or authorised by an authority, established or incorporated under a law in its home country or any other statutory authority in that country for the purpose of assessing, accrediting or assuring quality and standards of educational institutions, shall be eligible for admission to PhD programme.

Application Procedure:

Candidates, who intend to take admission for PhD have to apply in a prescribed proforma. On the receipt of applications, an Entrance Test will be conducted for the eligible candidates irrespective of number of applications received, which will be followed by an interview by the Departmental Research Committee.

The selection criterion for the admission in PhD programmes are as under:


  1. The Entrance Test shall be conducted for eligible candidates wherein the qualifying marks will be 50%. The syllabus of the Entrance Test shall consist of 50% of research methodology and 50% shall be subject specific. (The detailed syllabus is available on the website)
  2. The list of candidates clearing the entrance test (50%) shall be declared on the notice board/ website of the University.
  3. An interview/viva-voce to be organised by the University where the candidates are required to discuss their research interest/area through a presentation before Department Research Committee specified under R.Ph.D. 2.3.
  4. The candidates who qualify the UGC-NET (Including JRF) UGC-CSIR NET (Including JRF) SLET / GATE / GPAT with a valid score in terms of cut-off marks and duration, teacher fellowship holder or who have passed MPhil programme shall be exempted from appearing in the entrance test and deemed to be qualified for personal interview.

Candidates are selected based on the following criteria:

The interview/viva-voce shall also consider the following aspects, viz. whether:

  1. the candidate possesses the competence for the proposed research;
  2. the research work can be suitably undertaken at the Institution;
  3. the proposed area of research can contribute to new/additional knowledge.
  4. An interview/viva-voce to be organised by the University when the candidates are required to discuss their research interest/area through a presentation before Department Research Committee specified under R.Ph.D 3.3.
  5. The final selection will be based on following criteria:Weightage of 70% to the entrance test and weightage of 30% to the performance in the interview/ viva-voce.
