Venkaiah Naidu on Saturday<br \/>\ncalled for a people\u2019s movement of eco-conscious lifestyles<span> enabled by <\/span>serious<br \/>\nintrospection and bold actions and policies to combat the impact of climate<br \/>\nchange <span>and protect<br \/>\nthe environment.<\/span><\/p>\n<div class=\"separator\" style=\"clear: both;text-align: center\"><\/div>\n<p><span><br \/><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNoSpacing\"><span>\u201c<\/span>Man<br \/>\nhas tinkered too long with nature<span><br \/>\nand now <\/span>there is an urgent need to reverse this hazardous trend. It is<br \/>\nnot only the <span>government\u2019s<br \/>\n<\/span>duty, but it is the duty of every citizen and human being on earth to<br \/>\nsave this planet<span>,\u201d<br \/>\nsaid Naidu, while speaking after inaugurating a <\/span>two-day international<br \/>\nconference on \u2018Environmental Diversity &amp; Environmental Jurisprudence:<br \/>\nNational &amp; International Perspective\u2019 organised by Chandigarh University,<br \/>\nat its Gharuan campus.<\/p>\n<div class=\"separator\" style=\"clear: both;text-align: center\"><img decoding=\"async\" border=\"0\" data-original-height=\"1598\" data-original-width=\"5121\" height=\"200\" src=\"https:\/\/www.indcareer.com\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/05\/Press20Pic202201.jpg\" width=\"640\" \/><\/div>\n<p class=\"MsoNoSpacing\">Governor of Punjab, and Administrator, UT Chandigarh,<br \/>\nShri Banwarilal Purohit, Hon&#8217;ble Justices of the Supreme Court of India, Justices<br \/>\nB R Gavai and Surya Kant, United Nation Resident Commissioner in India, Shombi<br \/>\nSharp, Justice Shri Mohammad Rafiq, Chief Justice, High Court of Himachal<br \/>\nPradesh, representatives from 20 countries including Judges, High Commissioner,<br \/>\nAmbassadors, Environmentalists, Lawyers, Experts in Biodiversity and Environmental<br \/>\nJurisprudence from all over the globe, former Supreme Court Judge and former<br \/>\nNGT chairman, Justice (Retd.) Swatanter Kumar, S. Satnam Singh Sandhu,<br \/>\nChancellor, Chandigarh University, besides 4000 students participated on the<br \/>\nday one of the conference, which is being organised with a vision to formulate<br \/>\nthe roadmap and future direction to India\u2019s efforts at attaining the global targets<br \/>\nfor environment protection and climate change.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNoSpacing\"><span>In<br \/>\nhis inaugural address, Naidu said that man-made <\/span>causes have led to<br \/>\nclimate change as well as driving a million species to extinction. <\/p>\n<div class=\"separator\" style=\"clear: both;text-align: center\"><img decoding=\"async\" border=\"0\" data-original-height=\"2042\" data-original-width=\"3774\" height=\"346\" src=\"https:\/\/www.indcareer.com\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/05\/Press20Pic206201.jpg\" width=\"640\" \/><\/div>\n<p class=\"MsoNoSpacing\"><span>\u201c<\/span>We<br \/>\nhave harmed nature beyond repair, destroyed forests, disrupted the ecological<br \/>\nbalance, and are now reaping the adverse consequences. <span>There is a need to <\/span>do a serious introspection and<br \/>\ntake bold actions to mitigate the reality of rising temperatures, increasing<br \/>\nextreme events and diminishing biodiversity<span>,\u201d said Naidu, who was the chief guest at the ceremony.<\/span><\/p>\n<div class=\"separator\" style=\"clear: both;text-align: center\"><img decoding=\"async\" border=\"0\" data-original-height=\"2798\" data-original-width=\"4627\" height=\"388\" src=\"https:\/\/www.indcareer.com\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/05\/Press20Pic207.jpg\" width=\"640\" \/><\/div>\n<p><span><br \/><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNoSpacing\"><span>Noting<br \/>\nthat Indian <\/span>civilisational values have always worshipped nature<span>, Naidu said that the <\/span>concept<br \/>\nof ecological protection is embedded in our DNA, <span>and both our scriptures and our <\/span>constitution<br \/>\nenshrine the principles of environmental protection<span>. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNoSpacing\"><span>Quoting<br \/>\nMahatma Gandhi\u2019s statement: <\/span>\u2018Nature has enough for man\u2019s need but not<br \/>\nfor his greed\u2019, Naidu said that students have to be made aware of the carbon<br \/>\nand ecological footprint of their lifestyle choice at an early age.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNoSpacing\"><span>The<br \/>\nVice President said that India has been leading the way for the world <\/span>in<br \/>\nforging a collective action by various countries under the International Solar<br \/>\nAlliance as seen in the recent COP26 Summit in Glasgow.<span \/><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNoSpacing\">\u201cIn the words of the Prime Minister, what we need is a<br \/>\nmass movement of eco-conscious lifestyles. <span>To be able to achieve the 1.5\u00b0C global warming limit, we<br \/>\nmust aim at both macro-level systemic changes as well as micro-level lifestyle<br \/>\nchoices. We need a people\u2019s movement for environmental protection. <\/span>Unless<br \/>\nenvironmental protection becomes a people&#8217;s movement, our future is bleak\u201d, he<br \/>\nemphasised.<br \/><span>Lauding the Indian<br \/>\nhigher judiciary for upholding environmental justice over the years, he<br \/>\nsuggested that \u201clower courts too must uphold an eco-centric view and keep the<br \/>\nbest interests of the local populations and biodiversity in their judgments.\u201d He<br \/>\ncalled for stringent action against violators of pollution laws and strict<br \/>\nenforcement of the \u2018Polluter Must Pay\u2019 principle. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNoSpacing\">Highlighting the contributions of the National Green<br \/>\nTribunal, Naidu <span>called<br \/>\nfor <\/span>training more legal practitioners in environmental law<span>, making <\/span>poorer<br \/>\nsections aware of their rights<span>,<br \/>\ncreation of <\/span>specialised benches<span>, and <\/span>mak<span>ing<\/span><br \/>\nlegislations that maintain a fine balance between \u2018ecology and economy\u2019.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNoSpacing\">Emphasising the importance of such international<br \/>\nconferences, Shri Naidu said that \u201cwe have to learn from each other globally<br \/>\nand adopt best practices from all over the world\u201d. He appreciated Chandigarh<br \/>\nUniversity for its initiative and hoped the conference will open a new chapter<br \/>\nin environmental protection in the country.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNoSpacing\"><span>Speaking<br \/>\non the occasion, Hon\u2019ble Governor, Punjab And Administrator, UT Chandigarh Shri<br \/>\nBanwarilal Purohit said that human development in the 21st century is directly<br \/>\nlinked to protecting environmental resources from mindless consumption and<br \/>\ndestruction.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNoSpacing\"><span>\u201cThere<br \/>\nis a need to synergize economic development and environmental resources. We<br \/>\nneed to usher movement that involves the people &#8211; \u201cPeople\u2019s Participation\u201d. It<br \/>\nis only when we give people a direct stake in protecting the environment that<br \/>\nthey will become active partners of Government,\u201d said Governor, who presided<br \/>\nover the inaugural ceremony. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNoSpacing\"><span>Noting<br \/>\nthat human beings will have to develop a greater sense of universal<br \/>\nresponsibility to meet the challenge of our times, Purohit said, \u201cIt is<br \/>\nessential that we re-examine ethically what we have inherited, what we are<br \/>\nresponsible for, and what we will pass on to coming generations. We must act<br \/>\nbefore it is too late.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNoSpacing\">Hon&#8217;ble Justice of the Supreme Court of India, Justice B<br \/>\nR Gavai said, \u201cWe must remember that we have not inherited this planet from our<br \/>\nancestors but have borrowed it from our children. This way, we will be more<br \/>\njudicious in our usage of energy resources.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNoSpacing\">Hon&#8217;ble Justice of the Supreme Court of India, Justice Surya<br \/>\nKant said that the time has come that the world and its citizens shoulder their<br \/>\nefforts towards building a sustainable community in quick and effective way and<br \/>\nadded that Indian courts have never shied from exercising its discretionary<br \/>\npowers for the protection of environment.<b \/><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNoSpacing\">UN Resident Commissioner in India, Shombi Sharp said that<br \/>\ndeclining biodiversity<span>,<br \/>\nclimate change and pollution are the 3 main challenges facing mankind. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNoSpacing\"><span>\u201cThis<br \/>\nworld today is in turmoil but I have high hopes, especially from India, the<br \/>\ncurrent leader of the world in several fields. The Panchamrit mantra given by<br \/>\nPrime Minister Narendra Modi will play an important role in environmental<br \/>\nprotection,\u201d said Sharp, while appreciating the efforts of the National Green<br \/>\nTribunal. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNoSpacing\">Noting that human beings have always exploited nature for<br \/>\na comfortable life, Justice Shri Mohammad Rafiq, Chief Justice, High Court of<br \/>\nHimachal Pradesh, said that well-thought-out policies and active participation<br \/>\nof youth is necessary to ensure ecological balance.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNoSpacing\">Addressing the gathering, Chancellor of Chandigarh<br \/>\nUniversity, S. Satnam Singh Sandhu said that climate change and environment<br \/>\njustice is a global issues, and this conference is a unique platform where<br \/>\nvoice from all over the globe will be discussing and deliberating the roadmap<br \/>\nfor a better world of tomorrow.
