Chandigarh University’s ‘CUSAT’ to be
\none of the 75 student-made satellites being launched as a part of Amrut
\nMahotsav <\/span><\/b><\/p>\n

Reiterating the government\u2019s
\ncommitment of strengthening the private sector for the holistic development of
\nthe nation, Defence Minister Shri Rajnath Singh Ji on Monday said that an
\nactive and long-term public-private partnership is crucial to take the
\neducation & science sectors to a global level and make India a knowledge
\neconomy. <\/b>He was speaking at the inauguration ceremony of Kalpana Chawla
\nCentre for Research in Space Science & Technology (KCCRSST) at Chandigarh
\nUniversity, Gharuan, the first of its kind in North India.<\/p>\n

<\/div>\n

The Union Minister also launched
\nChandigarh University\u2019s Defence Scholarship Scheme, worth Rs 10 Crore, for the
\nwards of Defence Personnel of the three services.<\/p>\n

\n

\u00a0<\/p>\n<\/p>\n

Addressing the gathering, Shri
\nSingh hailed the establishment of the KCCRSST, and said that it is only through
\nefforts like these that India can become a leader in future technologies. Likening
\nthe Research Centre with \u2018pride of India\u2019 Kalpana Chawla, the Defence Minister hoped
\nthat this research facility would touch new heights of success, similar to the
\nremarkable achievements of the late India-born astronaut who brought universal
\nrecognition to her country of origin.<\/p>\n

Established with the objective
\nof training students in space science and satellite development and to meet
\nfuture challenges in the area of space research, this state of the art space
\ncentre would be the Ground Control Station (GCS) for the Chandigarh
\nUniversity’s Student Satellite (CUSAT), an in-house developed nano-satellite
\nbeing designed by the students of Chandigarh University, and a Geo Spatial
\nCentre for research, besides other important projects.<\/p>\n

Chancellor of Chandigarh
\nUniversity, S. Satnam Singh Sandhu, senior vice-president Prof Himani Sood,
\neminent scientists, faculty and students were present during the inauguration
\nceremony.<\/p>\n

The Defence Minister lauded
\nthe Chandigarh University for setting records of success in research &
\ninnovation, placements and global rankings in the last few years and described
\nthe achievements of the University as a symbol of the increasing participation
\nof the private sector in the field of education.<\/p>\n

\u201cAll these achievements of
\nChandigarh University are examples of the increasing importance of private
\nsector in the education sector of our country. I believe that if the education,
\nknowledge-science of our country has to reach the world level, and the country
\nhas to be made a ‘knowledge economy’, then the public and private sector of the
\ncountry will have to work together, and in this direction we Moving forward
\nfast,\u201d he said in his address, after the inauguration.<\/p>\n

Noting that space sector is
\ndeeply connected with our lives from national development to national security,
\nShri Singh said that the Government understands the potential of this space and
\nis committed to take it to newer heights and give new direction to the country\u2019s
\nprogress.<\/p>\n

Remembering late India-born
\nastronaut Kalpana Chawla, Shri Rajnath Singh described her as a symbol of women
\nempowerment, and urged the people to motivate their daughters to go ahead &
\ntouch unimaginable heights, echoing the Government\u2019s vision of increased
\nparticipation of women in all sectors.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt is extraordinary for a
\nuniversity to have its own space research centre and its own satellite. This is
\ncommendable feat and I am certain that more Indians like Aryabhatta, Vikram
\nSarabhai, Satish Dhawan and Kalpana Chawla will emerge from amongst you all if
\nyou eye different planets and constellations,\u201d the Defence Minister told the
\nstudents present on the occasion.<\/p>\n

It may be mentioned here that CUSAT
\nwill be among the 75 student-built satellites to be launched into space on the
\neve of the 75th<\/sup> Independence Day in 2022. The Chandigarh University
\nhas joined the list of 13 institutes like Indian Institute of Technology (IIT)
\nKanpur, IIT Bombay and became the first university in North India to design and
\ndevelop its own satellite. For the project, 75 students of the University have
\nbeen working on the Chandigarh University Student Satellite Project under the
\nguidance of eminent Indian scientists including Padma Shri Prof RM Vasagam,
\nPadma Shri Dr Mylaswamy Annadurai, Padma Shri YS Rajan, Padma Bhushan Dr BN
\nSuresh, Padma Shri Dr BN Dattaguru, V Mahadevan, Dr L V Muralikrishna Reddy,
\nand Dr K Gopalakrishnan.<\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/p>\n<\/p>\n

With the launch of CUSAT,
\nPunjab will become the first border state in India to have its own satellite in
\nspace. The launch of the university’s nanosatellite-CUSAT will prove to be an
\nimportant step for the country, as it will collect data related to border
\nintrusion detection, agriculture, weather forecasting, natural disaster
\nforecasting, which will be helpful in research and study of various problems in
\nthese areas. In addition, the GCS will help develop satellite research
\nfacilities and launch satellites in countries that do not have developed
\nsatellite technology. The GCS under the KCCRSST will monitor majority of Low
\nEarth Orbit (LEO) Satellites including CUSAT and being a member of SatNOGS
\nproject, will be monitoring more than 380 satellites with over 810 transmitters
\nin more than 50 Countries. <\/p>\n

Speaking on the occasion,
\nChancellor of Chandigarh University, S. Satnam Singh Sandhu said that ever
\nsince our inception, the university has been striving to provide quality,
\ninnovative and experiential learning to its students and establishment of this
\ncentre is one of the steps in this direction.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe have always been a pioneer
\nin the field of Research and Development and this centre of excellence will
\nfurther strengthen our position in aerospace technology. This state of the art
\ncentre, will not be limited to the students of Chandigarh University. We will
\nsoon be announcing short term courses for Satellite design and development,\u201d he
\nsaid.<\/p>\n

\u201cThrough this centre, which
\nhas come up at the cost of Rs 3.50 Crore, Chandigarh University will help in
\ndeveloping satellite research facilities in 57 countries including Brazil,
\nEgypt, Colombia, Turkey as well as train foreign students for satellite design
\nand development,\u201d S. Sandhu added.<\/p>\n
