During the 23rd convocation of Visvesvaraya Technological University (VTU), Professor V. Kamakoti from IIT Madras urged engineering graduates to seriously consider research as a full-time profession. He emphasized that research can be pursued as academics or by venturing into technology-based entrepreneurship.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Prof. Kamakoti acknowledged India’s significant digital revolution, citing examples such as UPI, Aadhaar, and Arogya Setu, which have benefitted marginalized sections of society and fostered a sense of inclusiveness globally. He encouraged everyone to take pride in being a part of this revolution.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Addressing the graduates, he highlighted the abundance of opportunities available in the current landscape, where initiatives and entrepreneurship from creative young minds are highly supported. Prof. Kamakoti shared his optimism about the potential for many of the graduates to become successful entrepreneurs, contributing to India’s growing list of “Unicorns” – startups valued at over $1 billion – and becoming both job and wealth creators.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The professor stressed the importance of a robust research and innovation ecosystem for societal development. He urged a significant number of graduates to dedicate themselves to foundational and translational research activities, aiming to achieve large-scale societal benefits and transformation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
He emphasized that research, innovation, and technology with specific focus and relevance to societal needs are essential. By targeting local market needs effectively, these initiatives can lead to successful indigenization.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Lastly, Prof. Kamakoti called upon the students to pledge their commitment to contributing to the nation’s education goals, ensuring 100% Gross Enrolment Ratio (GER), and leaving no one behind in accessing quality education.
