Aligarh, July 12: Aligarh Muslim University (AMU) Vice Chancellor, Prof Tariq Mansoor today inspected the ramped up facilities at the Jawaharlal Nehru Medical College (JNMC) and reviewed preparations for the anticipated third Covid wave.
He visited the dedicated Covid ICU and Covid ward where 60 out of 100 beds are now connected to oxygen panels and the paediatric ICU with 50 oxygen connected beds. The Vice Chancellor also inspected the newly installed high capacity Oxygen Generation Plants.
“Since medical oxygen has become an important commodity in the fight against the Covid pandemic, we have worked assiduously to create infrastructure that will meet the needs in case of resurgence in Covid infections. With the increased number of beds in ICUs connected with the oxygen supplies, we are making sure that no Covid patient dies of the shortage of oxygen”, said Prof Mansoor.
He added: “We have specially focused on increasing beds and other facilities at the Paediatric High Dependency Units (HDUs) as experts are alarmed that the third wave might affect the children more adversely. We do not know whether the next wave will have an impact on children, but to be prepared, beds have been installed with oxygen supply panels in the paediatric ICU”.
“To update the Covid ward, a dedicated ICU with 15 beds connected to the oxygen panels and two isolation beds within the ICU for Covid infected pregnant women are now fully functional. Even the step-down wards have beds connected with direct oxygen supply,” said Prof Haris M Khan (Medical Superintendent).
Dr Obaid A Siddiqui (Nodal Officer, Oxygen Gas Plant) said that the installation of the oxygen plant has reduced the dependency on liquid oxygen and made us self-sufficient to directly connect ICU and Covid ward beds with oxygen supply.
Earlier in June, a high capacity Oxygen Generation Plant imported from Germany, capable of producing 874 litres of oxygen per minute to cater to 250 patients at a time was inaugurated by the Vice Chancellor at the Trauma Centre of JNMC. The unit has two PSA generators, two compressors and one air tank with the capacity of 5,500 litres and an oxygen storage tank of 3000 litres.
Meanwhile, the office of the Medical Superintendent announced that the special wards have started functioning from 8:00 am today (July 12).
According to the Prof Haris M Khan (Medical Superintendent), “The General AC rooms (6, 7, 8, 9, 10, 11, 20, 21, 22, 23, 24, 25, 26 and 27), Deluxe rooms (12, 13 and 14), VIP Rooms (16, 17, 18 and 19), Teachers room (15) and Students rooms (28, 29 and 30) are available functional rooms.
